Two elite snipers are hired to guard opposite towers over a classified gorge and stop Hollow Men from escaping. Levi is a PTSD-scarred former U.S. Marine. Drasa is a Lithuanian operative often used by the Kremlin and is grieving a dying father. They bond across the chasm with signs, chess, and drums, fall in love, then fall into the gorge and learn the truth. A World War II bioweapons leak mutated soldiers and wildlife, and a private firm called Darklake has been harvesting hybrids for super-soldier research while disposing of finished guards. They trigger a nuclear fail-safe, kill Bartholomew’s extraction team, and reunite after quarantine.
The film blends romance, sci-fi, and action-horror. Its main themes are isolation, trust, risk for love, military and corporate secrecy, and monster-movie fallout. It is not built around identity politics, systemic race or gender theory, or present-day activist framing. Hell and Hollow Men language is atmosphere and flavor, not a Christian moral lens. Audience-facing woke content is minimal, with a competent female co-lead and mild private-military conspiracy villainy rather than identity messaging.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Gorge.
Woke representation / casting
The film pairs a highly skilled female sniper with a male lead and also features a powerful corporate woman and a brief black British predecessor. Women hold clear combat and authority roles on screen. There is no rainbow casting package, no race or gender swap of known source material, and no first-woman marketing push. The female lead works as an equal partner rather than as a foil who makes men look foolish.
14%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. No audience-facing race, gender, queer, or social-justice sermonizing. Exposition is mission brief, trauma, bioweapon history, and corporate cover-up.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. Story engine is lonely operatives, cross-gorge romance, mutation horror, and escape. Not organized around identity groups, representation arcs, or activist identity messaging.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
A secret private firm uses illegal bioweapon work and treats guards as disposable. That setup fits ordinary conspiracy-thriller villainy. It is not framed as an attack on whiteness, patriarchy, toxic masculinity, Christianity, or traditional family life. The distrust of military-industrial power stays mild.
12%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. as this is an original screenplay from the Black List 2020, not an adaptation of established characters or historical figures rewritten for DEI optics.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few viewers worried about a girl-boss tone before release, and one niche take linked female-started romance to a Hollywood woke era. Those notes stayed small and did not grow into a long campaign calling the film DEI propaganda. Some conservative-leaning viewers said the movie was not woke.
8%
Creator track record context
Derrickson, Dean, and most producers have low stored activist scores in the single digits to low teens. One casting director has a higher record for open diversity advocacy, which gently raises the factor. Overall the team is not activist-driven relative to what appears on screen.
