Jessica James is a young playwright in Brooklyn who fills her apartment with rejection letters. She is still angry about her breakup with Damon when her friend Tasha sets her up with Boone, a divorced app maker. Jessica and Boone date while both keep watching their former partners online. The movie is a fast, funny, and sometimes crude romantic comedy about love, work, and learning to move forward.
The story gives Jessica strong confidence and makes her creative work more important than winning a man. She teaches theater to children, speaks bluntly about gender rules, jokes about men taking up space, and calls marriage an outdated social plan. A baby shower scene centers on a book called The ABCs of Subverting the Patriarchal Paradigm. Tasha is a lesbian friend, and Jessica's romance with white Boone is treated as normal, so race and sexuality appear in the story without becoming the main conflict.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Incredible Jessica James.
Woke representation / casting
Jessica Williams leads as a black woman in a film written as her star vehicle. Boone is white, Damon is black, and Tasha is a white lesbian best friend. The supporting cast also includes several people of color in important roles. The mix fits a modern New York setting, but interviews frame it as a move beyond the usual straight white male lead.
42%
Woke political dialogue
Jessica says that marriage is an outdated social construct. Jessica gives a baby-shower book about subverting the patriarchal paradigm and says people should question the system. The film jokes about raw feminine energy, gender identity, and sexual harassment role-play. These ideas appear in several short scenes rather than in one long speech.
46%
Identity-driven story themes
Jessica's main struggle is learning that her worth does not depend on a boyfriend. She refuses to be defined as someone's girlfriend and keeps her writing and teaching goals ahead of romance. The women around her provide much of the advice, support, and creative energy. Boone and Damon remain flawed love interests while Jessica receives the final career success.
48%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film questions marriage and traditional relationship roles through Jessica's jokes and choices. Jessica gives a book about challenging the patriarchal system and treats gender rules as something to resist. The film also uses jokes about sexual harassment and gender identity. It does not attack Christianity, capitalism, or broad Western institutions.
42%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original screenplay with no established character, canon, or historical figure being changed.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No major anti-woke complaints appeared in news, audience sources, or the supplied X research.

Creator track record context
The cached scores are Jim Strouse 1, Alex Turtletaub 45, Michael B. Clark 41, and Kerri Hundley 12. The two higher scores come from work linked to queer identity or representation. The director has no strong activist pattern in the cached record. This is supporting context, while the film's own dialogue and themes provide the stronger signal.
