In 1956, JB Peña moves with his wife to Del Rio, Texas, to work as a school superintendent and to join the local country club for its excellent golf course. The all-white club rejects him because he is Mexican-American. He meets five teenage Mexican-American caddies who work at the club but are not allowed to play there. The boys have built their own one-hole course in a field. JB convinces them to form a high school golf team and works with his friend Frank to coach them toward the state championship.
The film is a true underdog sports story about Mexican-American boys who face 1950s prejudice at a country club and in town while they practice and compete. Mucho Mas Media, a studio focused on Latino stories, produced it along with others, and the director has spoken about themes of Latino identity in America. Viewers see clear emphasis on the team's ethnic background and the historical barriers they faced as Mexican-Americans. But the main focus stays on hard work, learning discipline, playing fair, building character, and earning success through skill rather than modern political messages or grievances. A normal viewer would notice the story of ethnic pride in achievement and the old prejudice, but it comes across as a heartfelt family drama about resilience and golf more than activist content.
