Stacy DeNovo is a Chicago baker who wants to win a Christmas baking contest after a painful breakup. In the fictional European kingdom of Belgravia, she meets Lady Margaret, a duchess who looks exactly like her. Margaret wants a short break from royal duties and an arranged marriage to Prince Edward. The women trade places, but the plan turns into a warm and silly romance when both women fall for the other woman’s partner.
The film gives major roles to Vanessa Hudgens, Nick Sagar, and Alexa Adeosun. Kevin is shown as a caring black single father, and he becomes Margaret’s love interest. Stacy and Margaret also make their own choices about work, love, and royal duty. These points add a mild diversity and female-empowerment message, but the movie stays focused on romance, Christmas fun, baking, and a class fantasy rather than politics or identity debate.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Princess Switch.
Woke representation / casting
The film gives prominent roles to Vanessa Hudgens, Nick Sagar, and Alexa Adeosun. Kevin and Olivia form a visible black father-and-daughter family, and Kevin becomes one of the two main love interests. Margaret and Kevin are a central interracial couple, while Hudgens also plays a non-white princess in a leading role. The film does not make race a plot issue, but this positive pattern and the role-model framing around Hudgens add a clear diversity signal.
25%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters do not give political speeches about race, gender, sexuality, class, or activism. Their talks focus on romance, work, royal duties, family, and Christmas.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The two female leads choose their own partners instead of accepting the planned royal marriage. Margaret leaves court life for a short time, and Stacy carries her work skills into royal life. Netflix labels the movie “Girl Power,” which adds a mild female-empowerment signal. The story still ends with conventional man-and-woman romances and does not make gender politics its main subject.
18%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. Royal duties and an arranged marriage create the plot problem, but the film treats them as fairy-tale obstacles. The story does not attack modern Western institutions, family life, religion, or men as a group.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie uses a familiar look-alike and class-switch idea, but it creates new characters in fictional kingdoms. It does not rewrite a known character or historical person around identity politics.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Reported complaints focus on editing mistakes, the British accent, plot holes, and the film’s cheesy style. No major anti-woke or anti-left campaign appears in the coverage reviewed.

Creator track record context
Writer Megan Metzger has academic work about queer representation in RuPaul’s Drag Race. Writer Robin Bernheim Burger often centers female protagonists, while director Mike Rohl has no high-confidence public activist or DEI record. The cached producer and casting context is mostly commercial and craft-focused. This background adds only a mild context signal because the film itself is not queer or political.
