Isabella, called Izzy, owns a small salon in New York and helps at a local community center. Prince Thomas of the fictional country Lavania is in New York for a wedding arranged by his family. Izzy is hired to cut his hair, then travels to Lavania with her friends to style the royal wedding. The light romantic comedy follows their growing love as Thomas faces family duty, royal debt, and a choice between a planned life and his own wishes.
The story gives Izzy a strong voice and makes her the person who teaches Thomas to respect workers and notice poor families near the palace. She pushes him to help children, donates royal items, and later chooses to run the community center instead of returning to the salon. The film also treats the planned development of a poor neighborhood as an injustice, and Thomas rejects a marriage meant to save his family’s money. Walter’s story adds a brief but clear gay love story when he says he once left Richard behind, so the movie mixes romance with messages about personal choice, community help, and fair treatment.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Royal Treatment.
Woke representation / casting
The movie puts an Italian-American New York woman and an Egyptian-Canadian actor in the two lead roles. The fictional kingdom also uses a visibly varied supporting cast, including an older gay royal adviser. Laura Marano said the team wanted a world filled with people from different places instead of the usual white male prince. The setting is invented, so the main issue is the open diversity goal rather than a clear historical mismatch.
58%
Woke political dialogue
The movie uses repeated lines about changing the world and helping a community. Izzy tells Thomas to act instead of waiting for permission, and Thomas later says he must help the school and the poorer part of town. The royal family calls the redevelopment a land deal, while Thomas calls it an injustice to local people. These lines support activist-style community and economic messaging, but the movie has no long political speech.

Identity-driven story themes
Izzy repeatedly acts as the moral guide who tells a prince how to treat workers and help children. The second half follows her push to support a neglected neighborhood and her choice to lead a community center. The film rejects a marriage arranged for money and treats personal freedom, career choice, and community action as better than family duty. Walter’s lost love for Richard adds a positive gay story, but it is brief and not the main romance.
54%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The movie presents royal parents as willing to use their son’s marriage to pay royal debt. The planned rebuilding of the poor Uber area would remove the people who live there, and Thomas calls that an injustice. The film also shows a landlord taking money from Izzy after failing to repair the salon. Izzy and Lauren resist family pressure to live only as women tied to a job or a wedding, but the story does not attack Christianity or all Western institutions.
48%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie tells an original story set in fictional Lavania. It does not adapt a known character, historical person, or established canon.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Public reaction centered on acting, plot, accents, and chemistry. The X research pass reported no anti-woke reaction, and no clear wider complaint said the film pushed DEI or identity politics.

Creator track record context
Cached context gives low scores to director Rick Jacobson and writers Holly Hester and Melanie Summers. Producers Vanessa and Laura Marano have moderate social-justice context from their work on Saving Zoë. Casting director Christina Asher has a strong record of supporting Māori and Pacific representation. The higher-scored people fit the movie’s diversity and community themes, but the full creative group is mixed rather than activist-led.
