Gardner Elliot is the first person born on Mars, where scientists hide his life from Earth. At sixteen, he travels to Earth to meet Tulsa, an online friend, and to find the man he thinks is his father. Earth's gravity is killing him, so their trip becomes a race against time. The movie mixes young romance, family mystery, road-trip danger, and soft science fiction.
The opening gives a short warning that people have harmed Earth and may use up its resources. That warning supports the Mars mission, but it soon fades behind Gardner's search for love and family. Gardner and Tulsa are lonely teens who help each other trust people and feel less alone. The story favors a normal boy-girl romance, caring parent figures, and wonder at everyday life on Earth.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Space Between Us.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main teen couple and most lead roles do not form a broad identity display. The women scientists serve the Mars story, and the movie does not present their sex as a special achievement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Nathaniel opens the movie by saying people have harmed Earth and may drain its resources. His speech presents settling Mars as a fresh start. Old footage later repeats part of the warning. This message stays brief and does not guide the romance or road trip.
15%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. Gardner's questions about where he belongs concern his parents, home, and lonely childhood. The story does not build this search around race, sex, gender, or sexuality.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. NASA and a private company hide Gardner to protect the Mars mission and its money. The film treats this as a personal cover-up, not as a wider attack on Western culture, family, or social rules.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie tells an original story and does not remake an established character through identity-based changes.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Public criticism focuses on poor science, plot holes, heavy emotion, and the actors' age gap. No meaningful complaint says that the movie pushes woke or DEI ideas.
0%
Creator track record context
The key creators have mostly low cached scores. Peter Chelsom has one later film about racism and class as mild context. Cathy Schulman has discussed barriers for women, while Robbie Brenner has produced projects with feminist themes. Most other key creators have little activist history.
