Mario and Luigi are brothers who live in the Mushroom Kingdom after stopping Bowser’s first plan. Bowser Jr. attacks the kingdom and takes Rosalina because he wants to free his father and restore the Koopa family name. Peach, Toad, Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi travel through bright space worlds while Bowser Jr. builds a huge weapon. The movie uses quick jokes, loud fights, game references, and a light family tone.
Peach becomes the main rescuer when she leads the search for Rosalina and reaches the danger with Toad. She handles major fights and often appears more ready for action than Mario, while Mario and Luigi handle a separate fight for much of the movie. The story makes Peach and Rosalina sisters, so two female heroes stand at the center of the rescue. This creates a clear girlboss-style focus, but the movie still gives much of its time to family loyalty, Bowser Jr.’s need for his father, teamwork, and game-style action.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The voice cast includes actors from several backgrounds, but the characters are fantasy game figures rather than identity-based human roles. The film and its marketing do not present the casting as a diversity or representation message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue centers on rescue, family, loyalty, jokes, and battles. No reported scene uses modern activist, DEI, gender-politics, or social-justice language.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Peach leads the search for Rosalina and takes the main rescuer role. She handles major action while Mario and Luigi spend much of the film on a separate fight. The film places Peach and Rosalina at the center of the emotional story by making them sisters. The repeated pattern gives the film a clear girlboss-style emphasis, although family loyalty and teamwork remain the wider message.
48%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film does not attack traditional families, men, religion, capitalism, or Western institutions. Its conflicts involve fantasy villains, family failure, and a weapon that threatens the galaxy.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film changes Mario lore by making Peach and Rosalina sisters and expands Peach’s action role. Those changes serve the film’s family plot and adaptation style, with no clear DEI or activist framing.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Some right-leaning posts call Peach a girlboss and say Mario is pushed aside. Other posts label the Peach-centered story woke or feminist. A niche reviewer also issued a “Woke Report,” and a meme spread the idea that Miyamoto stopped Nintendo from making a woke version. The reaction remains scattered and much smaller than the general debate about pacing and story quality.
33%
Creator track record context
The directors and writers mainly make mainstream family animation. Their interview describes the film as a love letter to game fans and says the team mixed game ideas in new ways. The film gives Peach an expanded heroic role, but no creator statement frames that choice as a social message. No reviewed creator record connects this title to activist, DEI, or identity politics.
