The Unholy follows Gerry Fenn, a disgraced reporter who travels to Banfield, Massachusetts, after hearing about a strange report involving a cow found badly cut. He meets Alice, a hearing-impaired teenage girl who suddenly hears, speaks, and heals sick people after seeing a woman who looks like the Virgin Mary. Crowds fill the small New England town, while church officials and the news media try to control the miracle. Gerry first wants a story that will repair his career, but he must decide whether the power is holy or a trap from a demon. The tone is dark and built around sudden scares, religious images, and growing danger.
The film uses Catholic churches, prayers, saints, a vision of Mary, and a battle between God and the devil as its main ideas. It also shows false faith, public panic, greedy church leaders, dishonest reporting, and Gerry's path toward doing the right thing. Alice's hearing loss makes the miracle seem personal, while her new powers draw the town into a dangerous promise of healing. The movie asks whether people will trust a miracle before they learn where its power comes from.
