Jack Cunningham was once a high school basketball star in working-class San Pedro, Los Angeles. Years later, he works construction, lives alone, drinks from morning to night, and remains separated from his wife. A priest from his old Catholic school asks him to coach a weak team after its coach suffers a heart attack. Jack uses hard practices and smart plays to build the team while he faces grief over his son’s death and the damage caused by his addiction. The film is a serious, rough drama about shame, loss, family, faith, and the slow work of recovery.
The players come from different backgrounds, but the story gives its strongest focus to their growth as a team. Brandon is a quiet, talented point guard who must learn to lead, while Marcus must learn discipline and earn his place again. Jack’s harsh coaching helps the players improve, but his drinking causes a collapse that sends him to rehab and forces him to face his grief. The story values responsibility, friendship, family support, faith, and second chances.
