Poppy and Branch learn about six music-genre Troll tribes when Rock Queen Barb tries to force everyone into one sound. Poppy discovers that Pop once tried the same thing by stealing strings and rewriting scrapbook history. The story then turns toward restoring multi-genre harmony instead of one tribe ruling the rest. The world is a bright fantasy music setting where each tribe stands for a different musical culture.
The clearest message is a multiculturalism allegory. Genres stand for cultures, Rock’s forced empire and Pop’s old unite-everyone plan are both condemned, and true harmony means keeping differences rather than erasing them. Cultural appropriation becomes Poppy’s main lesson, with lines about winners writing history and soft kid-friendly framing of difference and power. Casting also maps voices and leaders to different cultures in a deliberate representation-forward way, though it stays soft enough that younger kids may still hear a simple music-unites story.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Trolls World Tour.
Woke representation / casting
Fantasy music-tribe world maps identity to culture via Funk royalty, Latino Techno/Reggaeton voices, K-pop, South Asian supporting voices, and multiple female tribe leaders as representation-forward genre coding
34%
Woke political dialogue
Clear kid-friendly lines on winners writing history, rejecting “we’re all the same,” Pop’s theft/rebrand of other music, and harmony as keeping differences
48%
Identity-driven story themes
Core multiculturalism allegory equates genres with cultures, condemns forced sameness and cultural appropriation, and is hard for attentive viewers to miss
70%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Soft critique of dominant-culture hegemony and rewritten winner history via Pop Trolls, not a full institutional hit piece
40%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant; standard franchise expansion with new tribes and Cooper’s Funk origin, not identity rewrites of established characters or history
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Real but limited scattered complaints and one “go for woke” headline; no large sustained campaign, COVID VOD fight dominated
22%
