Marlo is a married mother of three living in a quiet New York suburb. Her newborn daughter, school problems with her son Jonah, and nonstop housework leave her tired, angry, and close to breaking. Her husband Drew loves the family, but he does not see how much pressure she carries until a night nanny arrives. The film uses dry jokes, raw family moments, and a strange turn that shows Tully is a younger part of Marlo’s own mind.
The film gives clear but limited space to queer identity. Marlo talks about loving a woman in her past, and Tully says she has several relationships with different kinds of people. These details support a more open view of sex and relationships, but they do not drive the main conflict. The stronger message comes from the film’s view that mothers are expected to put everyone else first, stay cheerful, and handle too much work without enough help.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Tully.
Woke representation / casting
The film centers two white women in a white middle-class family. The cast does not show a repeated diversity-first pattern. Marlo’s past relationship with Violet makes her bisexuality visible. Tully says she has several relationships, and the film treats that detail as casual talk. These queer details are real but brief.
15%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. No political speeches, activist rhetoric, or ideological debates appear in the script or performances.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film makes Marlo’s bisexual past and Tully’s open relationship part of the story. Marlo also searches for her younger, freer self through Tully. The main conflict follows sleep loss, mental health after childbirth, family strain, and the pressure to be a perfect mother. The film supports self-acceptance and more honest talk about motherhood. The queer material stays secondary to the family story.
34%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows Marlo doing most childcare and housework while Drew works and misses how exhausted she is. Marlo and Tully question the idea that mothers should call a baby a blessing and hide fear, anger, or sadness. The film treats the demand for a cheerful, selfless mother as an unfair pressure. Drew remains loving and helps repair the marriage, so the film does not make a broad attack on men, religion, or Western institutions.

Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. this is an original story with no established characters, canon, or historical figures altered for ideological reasons.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Extensive searches found zero notable anti-woke or right-leaning complaints accusing the film of promoting identity politics, DEI, or left-wing agendas; any public debate centered on mental health accuracy from affected viewers.

Creator track record context
The title’s writer, Diablo Cody, often writes complex female leads, and her public work includes feminist views and support for Time’s Up. Charlize Theron’s public profile includes feminist views, equal-pay advocacy, and support for #MeToo. Jason Reitman’s public record is milder, and most other listed producers and casting staff have little activist history. This gives the team moderate feminist context, but not a strong queer or DEI-first pattern.
