Twinless follows Roman, a quiet man who is trying to live after the sudden death of his identical twin, Rocky. He joins a support group for people who have lost a twin and meets Dennis, a lonely man who says he has suffered the same loss. The two men become close through shared grief, grocery trips, parties, and honest talks, but their bond grows uneasy when Dennis hides the truth about his past. The movie shifts from a sad friendship story into a dark and disturbing tale about lying, desire, guilt, and the need to belong.
Queer identity is central to the story. Dennis is gay, Rocky was gay, and Roman is straight, so the brothers' different lives shape Roman's grief and guilt. The film includes gay sex, Dennis's strong feelings for Roman, and Roman's earlier shame about Rocky, while it also shows Roman dating a woman. These parts are not side details because they drive the secret, the main twist, and much of the final conflict. The film treats loneliness and forgiveness through these relationships rather than through public political debate.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Twinless.
Woke representation / casting
The film gives two major male roles to gay characters, Dennis and Rocky. Dylan O’Brien plays both Rocky and his straight twin Roman, while openly gay writer-director James Sweeney plays Dennis. The choices make queer identity visible in the leading cast, but the movie does not build its wider cast around a diversity campaign. The roles are tied to the central plot, so the casting signal is moderate rather than dominant.
26%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters talk about grief, sexuality, family shame, and loneliness, but the movie does not use modern activist or political speeches.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The movie centers Dennis, a gay man who lies about having a dead twin so he can get close to Roman. Dennis had sex with Rocky before Rocky died, and that secret drives the film’s main twist. Roman’s guilt about mocking Rocky for being gay shapes his grief and his bond with Dennis. The film makes queer loneliness, desire, shame, and forgiveness major parts of the story.
84%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Roman’s earlier mockery of Rocky for being gay creates guilt and distance inside the family. The story contrasts Roman’s guarded, tough image with Rocky’s open gay life and Dennis’s need for closeness. Roman’s friendship with Dennis pushes him to face his past behavior and become more open with other people. The movie keeps this conflict personal and does not turn it into a broad attack on family or social institutions.
24%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story about fictional people, so it does not change an established character, source, or real event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One small X account called the movie “woke bs” because Dennis is a queer stalker who lies to get close to a straight man. A National Review write-up that circulated on X and Armond White supporters framed the film as “identity-politics busting,” not as a woke vehicle. Another tiny fan post praised it for having no “WOKE agenda nonsense.” The public search found no boycott, review-bombing push, or organized anti-woke campaign.

Creator track record context
James Sweeney is openly gay, and his earlier films explore queer identity, sexuality, and nonconformity. David Permut has a long record of LGBTQ and civil-rights projects. Dylan O’Brien has taken LGBTQ-focused roles and spoken about authentic representation, while other listed creators have mixed or limited public activist records. This gives the title strong creator-context support, led by Sweeney and Permut.
