Kate Carter used to chase storms in Oklahoma with her friends until a huge tornado killed most of them. Traumatized, she moved to New York and stopped. Her old friend Javi brings her back to test new technology during a big outbreak of storms. She meets Tyler Owens, a popular online storm chaser who posts videos and helps people after the damage. They work with their teams to face bigger and scarier tornadoes than before.
Twisters is a fast action movie about big storms, brave chasers, and one woman getting over her fear to do what she loves again. The main ideas are facing danger, helping neighbors after disasters, and respecting how powerful nature can be. There is a short part about a rich man who buys land cheap after storms to make money, and it is shown as bad. The teams have a mix of different people, which stood out to some watchers. The director worked hard to keep any talk of climate or politics out of the story so it would not feel like a lesson. Most people will see exciting chases, fun characters, country songs, and light romance instead of any social messages. The woke elements are small and stay in the background.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Twisters.
Woke representation / casting
The two main stars are a white actress and a white actor playing the leads with a romance. Supporting storm chaser roles include Latino, Asian American, black, and mixed actors. Some audiences noticed the mix more than in the 1996 movie and called it forced. The story does not highlight anyone's race or background as important.
22%
Woke political dialogue
There is almost no political talk at all. Characters discuss science, fear, helping after storms, and chasing. One short line notes storms happening more often without any activist spin or blame.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The core story is about personal loss and courage, coming back home, working together against nature, and a science experiment. No plots or messages about race, gender, sexuality, or identity groups.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
One bad guy is a rich investor who takes advantage of disaster victims by buying their land cheap. This is shown as selfish and wrong. It is a simple greed story common in action films and does not attack capitalism, family, or Western traditions in a modern activist way. Rural life and community are shown positively.
5%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie uses new characters in a new story. It is not changing old established figures or source material for identity reasons.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Online posts and some reviews complained about the diverse supporting cast feeling like DEI casting. A few mentioned the story having a hint of feminism or the no kiss ending. Other comments liked that it skipped climate preaching. The complaints were noticeable in corners of the internet and reviews but did not become a big national fight.
28%
Creator track record context
Key people have low scores overall. Lee Isaac Chung avoided turning this into a message film despite his past personal work. Michael Crichton pushed back against climate activism in his career. The team as a whole stayed focused on entertainment and character stories.
