Uncle Drew follows Dax Winslow, a basketball fan who works at Foot Locker and dreams of coaching a winning team. His chance at the Harlem Rucker Classic falls apart when his players leave him for his old rival, Mookie. Dax then finds Uncle Drew, a famous old streetball player, and takes him on a road trip to find Drew’s former teammates. The film uses broad jokes, sports action, and a warm underdog tone as the group tries to repair old friendships and win the tournament.
The film presents a mostly Black Harlem basketball world built around real NBA and WNBA stars, old age makeup, and streetball history. The team includes a preacher, a wheelchair user, and a nearly blind shooter, and each player brings a comic problem to the road trip. Dax learns to value family, teamwork, forgiveness, and the love of the game over money and pride. The women have smaller roles, while the main story follows the men’s friendships, rivalries, romance trouble, and return to the court.

Creator track record context
The director and writer have mainstream careers with little evidence of activist focus. Casting director Victoria Thomas has supported inclusive casting, and producer John Fischer has worked on some race-conscious films. Interviews about the movie focus on basketball, family, risk, and old versus young players, so creator background is only a mild signal.
