What They Had follows Bridget, a chef from California, who returns to her Chicago family after her mother Ruth wanders into a snowstorm while living with Alzheimer’s. Bridget, her brother Nicky, and their father Bert argue over whether Ruth should stay at home or move into memory care. Bridget also faces an unhappy marriage and a strained bond with her daughter Emma. The movie is a warm but painful family drama that mixes sharp jokes with grief, anger, love, and fear.
The movie follows three generations of women and asks how work, marriage, caregiving, and family duty change over time. Bridget says that her mother’s career left her as the housekeeper, and she links that old family role to losing track of who she was. Her father stands for an older view of marriage built on duty, while Bridget takes control of Ruth’s care and later chooses a new life. These gender-role ideas return through the family conflict, but Alzheimer’s, marriage, and the hard work of caring for a parent remain the main story.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for What They Had.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main family is white, and the film does not use a diverse cast as an identity message. The casting serves the family story rather than a representation campaign.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Bridget says her mother’s career left her as the housekeeper, and she says she lost track of who she was. Bridget and Burt also argue about marriage and Catholic faith. The film gives these ideas a real place in one major family argument. It does not use repeated slogans or current political speeches.
25%
Identity-driven story themes
The film follows Ruth, Bridget, and Emma across three generations of women. Bridget’s story questions the old idea that a woman should carry housework, please her family, and stay in an unhappy marriage. The story treats changing roles for women and men as a continuing part of the family conflict. Alzheimer’s and caregiving remain the main subject, so the gender message is important but not dominant.
41%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Burt represents an old-style father who expects marriage to last through duty and tells Bridget to return to her husband. Bridget links those family rules to her unhappy marriage and her years as a housekeeper. The film shows a Catholic father and a daughter who has left the faith, but it does not mock Christianity. The critique stays focused on family gender roles.
29%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story drawn from the director’s family. It does not change a known character, source world, or historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The available news, audience, Reddit, YouTube, and X evidence does not show complaints that the film pushes woke or DEI ideas. Public discussion centers on Alzheimer’s, family care, acting, and the ending.

Creator track record context
Elizabeth Chomko has a moderate profile and a clear history of writing about women, caregiving, and changing gender roles. Hilary Swank also has a moderate stored score, while Michael Shannon and most producers have mild or low stored scores. The title-related interviews support Chomko’s gender-role focus, but they do not show a broad activist campaign around this movie.
