Set in an Indiana town, the movie follows Evelyn Katz, who runs a shelter for women escaping abuse, and her teenage son Ziggy, who sings online for tips and attention. Evelyn thinks Ziggy is shallow because he wants money and fame, while Ziggy thinks she cares more about her work than her family. Evelyn treats Kyle, a quiet boy at the shelter, like the son she wishes she had. Ziggy tries to win Lila, a classmate who cares deeply about politics, and both mother and son copy each other's mistakes. The tone is dry and awkward as the family struggles to listen.
Political and social justice talk runs through school scenes, a youth arts event, and Ziggy's songs. Lila speaks about human rights, U.S. power, poverty, environmental issues, and corruption, while Ziggy copies her words to gain her attention. Evelyn's shelter work brings domestic abuse and court problems into the family conflict. The film treats activism as important but also mocks people who use good causes to feel superior, making its main message a warning about self-righteousness.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for When You Finish Saving the World.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The prominent roles are a modern Indiana mother, son, shelter workers, and students, with no diversity-first casting message. The story does not build an obvious identity-based group or make a casting choice the point.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Lila says the United States profits from human-rights abuses and talks about equity, environmental issues, and political corruption. Ziggy asks how to become political, writes an anti-Congress song, and helps make a song about the Marshall Islands. The dialogue is often mocking or self-serving, but activist language returns across the school and family scenes.
48%
Identity-driven story themes
Evelyn's life centers on social service and her belief that helping others makes her morally better. Ziggy copies activist language to impress Lila, while Evelyn tries to shape Kyle into a better version of her son. The story makes art, money, social activism, and moral pride part of the main family conflict. The film warns that good causes do not excuse self-centered behavior, which keeps the theme moderate.
42%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Lila blames U.S. power for profiting from human-rights abuses and acting like a savior to other countries. Shelter staff say the court system is rigged against women who do not speak English well. A former undocumented resident explains why she could not safely use the police or return to Honduras. These points recur in side plots and talks, but the movie does not attack Christianity or make the whole family system its target.
45%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie adapts Eisenberg's own original audio drama, but no identity-based change to an established character, real person, or historical event is shown. The changes concern the move from audio to screen and the family story's shape.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few reviews called the movie fake-woke or described it as a war of the woke because it centers on liberal activists and social-justice talk. One audience review said the script tried to be woke but felt shallow and patronizing. Most audience comments focused on boredom, cringe humor, and self-centered characters instead. The supplied X check found no anti-woke posts, and no organized boycott was found.
18%
Creator track record context
Jesse Eisenberg has a mild liberal and humanitarian record without a sustained identity-politics pattern. Emma Stone has a more visible feminist and progressive record, while the other producers have little public activist history. Eisenberg said the film came from a conflict between art and social activism and from his family ties to a domestic-violence shelter. The casting director is known for Indigenous representation work, but this title does not center that subject.
