Clare Shannon is a lonely 17-year-old girl who lives with her grieving father in a modern American town. Her father brings home an old music box that can grant seven wishes. Clare uses it to fix her school life, gain money, get a boyfriend, and hurt a bully. Each wish brings a hidden death, so her bright new life turns into a grim supernatural horror story.
The film shows Clare being bullied, grieving her mother, and feeling ashamed of her father’s poverty. It treats popularity, romance, beauty, and wealth as empty goals that become dangerous when she wants them too badly. Clare’s friend Ryan helps translate the box, while her other friends try to warn her about its cost. The story focuses on greed, addiction, guilt, and the cost of trying to control other people.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Wish Upon.
Woke representation / casting
The film has a mixed-race teen friend group and gives Clare an interracial romance with Ryan Hui. A release interview openly describes the supporting cast as diverse and says the pairing should become normal. The story does not make race or identity part of the conflict, so this remains a mild audience-visible representation signal.

0%

Creator track record context
John R. Leonetti has spoken about overdue change after Hollywood’s sexual-harassment reckoning and praised Get Out for its anti-racism message. Mary Vernieu has discussed representation and diverse role models in casting. The writer, producers, and other cached creators have little public activist or identity-focused history tied to this title. The context is mild and does not strongly shape the film.
