Jen Shaw hikes the Appalachian Trail with friends in rural Virginia. The group leaves the marked path and enters land controlled by the Foundation, a hidden mountain society. Jen must survive traps, violence, and a strange trial while her father searches for her. The movie uses bloody horror, sharp twists, and a serious tone.
The group includes a gay couple, an interracial couple, and a racially mixed group of young hikers. The story sets these city visitors against a closed society that talks about work, America, and shared property. The film also shows Jen becoming a strong survivor and later taking revenge on the Foundation leader. These ideas are clear, but the movie treats them as part of a messy horror story rather than one simple political lesson.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Wrong Turn.
Woke representation / casting
The hiking group includes an openly gay couple, an interracial couple, and a racially mixed group of young adults. Gary and Luis are visible members of the main group, even though they receive little personal story. Jen also serves as the main survivor and final fighter, but the film does not clearly market her as a special representation figure.
38%
Woke political dialogue
The Foundation speaks about its own ideal of America, shared work, and community duty. The hikers and local people argue about class, work, and modern city life. The dialogue presents a clear political contrast, but the movie does not support one side in a simple or steady way.
34%
Identity-driven story themes
The film places an openly gay couple inside the main group and treats their relationship as normal. The story also contrasts modern, mixed city friends with a closed mountain society built around old American beliefs. The identity themes are visible, but survival horror and family conflict remain more important to the plot.
41%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The Foundation claims that America was built on a better shared ideal than the modern country allows. The film criticizes both arrogant city visitors and violent traditionalists in the mountain community. The story raises questions about class, history, and social order, but it does not give a clear modern activist answer.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Several online comments call the film woke or complain about its political message. Some complaints mention the gay couple, the diverse friend group, and the change from cannibals to the Foundation. The reaction is scattered and mostly comes from user posts rather than major news coverage.
22%
Creator track record context
Mike P. Nelson has no documented activist or DEI-focused public record in the cached research. Alan B. McElroy is mainly known for horror and action writing. The wider production team also has mostly low cached scores and no clear political pattern.
