Xander Cage is an extreme athlete who once worked as a secret agent. People thought he was dead, but he is pulled back into the xXx program when a satellite control weapon called Pandora's Box is stolen. He gathers a new team of thrill seeking specialists and races a rival squad led by Xiang. Corrupt figures inside U.S. intelligence also stand in their way. The film is a loud mainstream action spy romp built on stunts, double crosses, and a government conspiracy plot, not a message drama.
Viewers can see several highly skilled women on the team, including sniper Adele Wolff, who is written and shown as a lesbian with clear queer flirting and jokes. Female operators are framed as equally lethal partners, and Serena is sold as a strong modern woman who can lead. Identity notes are real and visible, but they do not run the whole story. There is almost no long identity politics speech. Distrust of U.S. intelligence leaders fits classic spy thriller cynicism more than modern activist framing.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for xXx: Return of Xander Cage.
Woke representation / casting
The team is packed with skilled women in major action roles and an international cast in hero and fighter slots. Casting was sold as a global Fast-style squad and includes an openly lesbian action heroine played by Ruby Rose. That identity focus is visible beyond pure plot need, though much non-Western casting also tracks China and India market goals.
38%
Woke political dialogue
There are almost no identity politics speeches. Adele’s green-activist flavor and short queer jokes or flirt lines are quick character color, not a long activist debate. Lines about distrusting the government fit a normal spy thriller.
12%
Identity-driven story themes
The main story is satellite weapons, double agents, and extreme sports action. Adele is clearly written as a lesbian sniper with on-screen queer signals, and women are framed as equal partners. Those notes matter on screen, but the film does not turn on coming-out arcs, systemic identity oppression, or queer romance as the plot.
28%
Western institutional / cultural critique
U.S. intelligence leaders become power-hungry villains, and the director aimed for a watch the watchers distrust of authority. That is classic conspiracy cynicism about government abuse, not modern activist talk about patriarchy, whiteness, colonial guilt, or Christianity. Gender bits often still play as old-school male-gaze action comedy.
18%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. No identity-driven race or gender swaps of established franchise characters. Adele, Serena, and the international team are new roles. Xander stays the same male lead.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No serious anti-woke campaign treated this film as DEI propaganda or forced agenda. Critics focused on weak plotting and empty set pieces. Progressive outlets praised Adele’s queer visibility without a lasting culture-war fight.
0%
Creator track record context
Key creatives built careers on mainstream action and thrillers and show low activist scores. Caruso’s later public profile includes faith-adjacent work. There is no clear pattern of identity-first social-justice films driving this title.
