Christel Baras

Personal context

Summary

French casting director known for discovering Adèle Haenel and for extensive collaborations with Céline Sciamma, including Water Lilies, Tomboy, Girlhood, Portrait of the Lady on Fire and Petite Maman. Her casting career repeatedly centered young, nonprofessional and atypical performers, with particular attention to gender nonconformity, female subjectivity, queer themes and socially varied backgrounds. She was also associated with Collectif 50/50, the French film-industry organization advocating gender equality and improved representation. Baras described casting as a socially engaged process that can shape characters and direction, and colleagues credited her with bringing a politically conscious, confidence-building approach to inexperienced performers. Her wider credits include conventional dramas, comedies and genre films, and there is little evidence of a personal partisan or activist public persona beyond professional equality and representation concerns. The strongest pattern is therefore representation-first creative practice rather than overt political campaigning.
