2017 · Based on 1 season, 12 episodes through April 24, 2017 ·
APB follows Gideon Reeves, a billionaire engineer who takes control of Chicago's troubled 13th Police District after his best friend is murdered. He fills the station with an emergency app, drones, body armor, scanners, fast cars, and other tools. Detective Theresa Murphy and Captain Ned Conrad help him deal with cases, city politics, and the limits of private policing. The tone mixes fast crime cases, science-fiction gadgets, family drama, and jokes.
The clearest identity-focused story appears in episode seven. A gay college student tries to take his own life after his father rejects the person he loves. Officers Tasha Goss and Nicholas Brandt search for him, and Brandt tells the father to accept his son and help save him. The episode presents acceptance of gay relationships as the right answer, but this subject is a single subplot in a season mainly about crime, policing, money, and technology.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for APB.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The show uses a mixed Chicago police cast, but it does not frame the casting as a wider diversity message or make the mix unusual for the setting.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Episode 7 includes direct identity-focused dialogue about a gay college student whose father rejects the person he loves. Brandt tells the father to accept his son while the officers try to stop the suicide attempt. The dialogue is substantial in that episode but does not drive the rest of the season.
24%
Identity-driven story themes
Episode 7 makes a gay college student's suicide attempt a major case. The story links his crisis to his father's rejection and presents acceptance as the needed answer. Tasha and Brandt treat the relationship as valid and help reunite the son with his father. The issue does not return as a main story in the other episodes.
32%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The show questions private policing, surveillance, due process, and the mayor's control of the district. It does not turn those issues into a modern activist attack on gender roles, Western culture, or core institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. APB uses new fictional characters and is only loosely inspired by a real news article. It does not change an established character or source canon for identity reasons.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A NewsBusters article criticized episode seven for blaming a father who rejected his gay son and called it another attack on American fatherhood. The complaint treated the episode as anti-traditional and too sympathetic to gay identity. The post was a single right-leaning review, and no large boycott or sustained backlash appeared.
