Apple Cider Vinegar follows Belle Gibson, an Australian woman who claims that she survived brain cancer by eating well and using natural cures. She builds a popular app, cookbook, and online brand in Melbourne during the early days of Instagram. Milla, a young woman with cancer, becomes Belle’s model and rival, while Lucy follows Belle’s advice during her own breast cancer treatment. The show jumps across several years and mixes dark drama, sharp comedy, glamour, and painful scenes about illness.
The show is led by four young women whose work and health choices are tied to beauty, success, and online attention. Chanelle, played by Aisha Dee, becomes a major manager and whistleblower, but race is not a story issue. Belle briefly talks about the patriarchy, and the story shows women feeling unheard by doctors and trapped by pressure to be perfect. These ideas support the warning about false hope, but the main message is about lies, medical harm, and the danger of trusting social media.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Apple Cider Vinegar.
Woke representation / casting
The main cast is a group of four women, and three of them build or lead wellness businesses. Aisha Dee plays Chanelle, giving a black actor a major manager and whistleblower role. The story does not make race a plot issue or present the casting as a diversity campaign. The setting and subject explain much of the female-led cast, so this is a mild representation signal.
17%
Woke political dialogue
Belle briefly says that the patriarchy sets people against one another. Characters also discuss women’s health and the pressure to be perfect. These ideas appear across the season, but most dialogue concerns cancer, fraud, and personal guilt. The show does not turn into a party-political debate.
18%
Identity-driven story themes
The show repeatedly links women’s health choices to beauty standards, online success, and the need to be perfect. Belle and Milla turn illness and personal identity into public brands, while Lucy shows how those messages can affect treatment. Female friendship and the “girlboss” world shape the conflict across several episodes. These themes are clear, but the main warning is about fraud and medical harm rather than modern identity politics.
34%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The series shows hospitals and doctors as hard to trust because some patients feel rushed, unheard, or pushed toward harsh treatment. It also blames publishers, media, and wellness businesses for helping Belle sell false hope. The story still presents medical care as necessary, since Milla waits too long and Lucy returns to chemotherapy. The criticism is recurring but mixed, so it is not a broad attack on Western institutions.
30%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The series is a fictionalized account of Belle Gibson’s real scandal. Its invented or combined characters and changed relationships serve the plot, not an identity-based rewrite.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few tiny right-leaning or wellness accounts called the show propaganda over its medical framing. No notable posts attacked the show for DEI, race or gender swaps, forced diversity, girlboss writing, anti-male ideas, or LGBT focus. There was no boycott, review-bombing drive, or sustained anti-woke campaign.
8%
Creator track record context
Samantha Strauss has a low public political profile and no clear activist pattern. Anya Beyersdorf has written about gender expectations, while Angela Betzien has worked on poverty, family violence, stolen-generation history, and reconciliation. Kaitlyn Dever has supported LGBTQ+ representation and gender-justice causes. The wider producer group has little public identity-driven activism, so the team context is mild.
