2022 · Based on 1 season, 8 episodes through January 20, 2022 ·
As We See It follows Jack, Violet, and Harrison, three autistic young adults who share an apartment in Los Angeles with help from an aide. Jack works as a computer coder while facing his father's cancer. Violet is an Asian American woman who wants love and sex, while her brother tries to control her choices. Harrison struggles to leave home because noise and crowds frighten him. The show mixes warm comedy with heavy family drama, work trouble, fear, and grief. Autism is not a side detail because every main story grows from the roommates' different needs and from the way other people treat them. The season repeatedly centers acceptance, self-acceptance, independence, and the pressure to act "normal." Violet's dating story puts adult sexual choice against family control, while Jack's and Harrison's stories focus on work, romance, friendship, and sensory stress. The show presents autistic people as full adults who deserve love, jobs, privacy, and a say in their own lives, so identity and inclusion remain central to what viewers see.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for As We See It.
Woke representation / casting
All three lead characters are autistic and all three lead actors identify as autistic. The show also uses autistic actors in several supporting roles, including some actors playing non-autistic characters. The production included autistic or neurodiverse people in the writers' room, editing, and crew. The casting and the public focus on authenticity make representation a main design choice across the show.
92%
Woke political dialogue
Characters repeatedly talk about being accepted, being treated as normal, and learning to accept themselves. Mandy and other non-autistic characters tell the roommates that they have value as they are, while the roommates describe pressure to hide or change themselves. Characters also speak in favor of autistic adults having love, work, privacy, and control over their choices. These lines recur across the season, but the dialogue is personal and emotional rather than a broad political speech.
38%
Identity-driven story themes
Autistic identity drives every main storyline. Jack deals with work, blunt speech, and his father's cancer, while Harrison faces sensory overload, fear of leaving home, and loneliness. Violet's story centers on dating, sex, family control, and her wish to live as an adult. The season repeatedly asks viewers to see autistic people as full adults who need support without losing their independence.
82%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show presents family rules, workplace demands, and dating customs as barriers that punish the roommates for acting differently. Van's control of Violet's phone and dating life is treated as harmful, and the season ends with her gaining more say. The story also questions the idea that autistic adults must act normal to be accepted. It does not turn these problems into a wider attack on capitalism, Christianity, or conservative politics.
24%
Woke character or canon changes
The Israeli source series had a female roommate named Zohar, while this remake presents the matching lead as Violet, an Asian American woman. The story also moves from Israel to Los Angeles and changes names, families, and side plots. The identity change is visible, but no public report shows a culture-war rewrite or a complaint about it. Most other changes are ordinary remake choices rather than identity-based canon changes.
14%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The X research found no anti-woke complaints, and broader coverage found no sustained complaint that the show pushes DEI or left-wing politics. The reported debate centered on disability portrayal and Autism Speaks, not anti-woke politics.

Creator track record context
Jason Katims has a stored score of 58/100 and a repeated focus on progressive representation and autism. Dana Idisis and Yuval Shafferman have stored scores of 68 and 58 because of repeated autism-centered work. Michelle Sam has a stored score of 50 and a background in race, gender, sexuality, and social-justice writing. Jesse Peretz and several other producers have low or mixed stored scores, so the overall context is representation-focused but not uniformly activist.
