2016–2017 · Based on 2 seasons through June 2, 2017 ·
Flaked follows Chip, a former alcoholic who lives in Venice Beach, California, and acts like a wise guide for people around him. He runs a small stool business, helps others in recovery, and hides the fact that his own sobriety is shaky. Chip also wants London, the woman his best friend Dennis loves, while his old lies keep damaging both men. The show uses dry jokes, sad drama, and a loose beach-town mood as Chip tries to keep control of his life.
The story includes a recurring fight over a hotel project that threatens the local feel of Venice and turns Chip into an outcast when his support for the project backfires. That plot gives the show a mild message against new development that could drive out local businesses, but it stays tied to Chip's personal failures. Season 1 focuses on his lies, guilt, sexual choices, and friendship with Dennis. Season 2 follows housing trouble, new romances, another relapse, and the hard work of making amends. Across both seasons, the main themes are addiction, honesty, selfishness, and the gap between a helpful public image and a damaged private life.

Woke political dialogue
Several scenes deal with city meetings, a Save Venice campaign, and arguments over a hotel development. The talk favors local residents over outside money and treats neighborhood activism as useful. The politics stay local and practical, with no repeated speeches about race, gender, or identity. This is a mild signal rather than a major political focus.
15%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The main themes are addiction, guilt, lying, friendship, romance, and recovery. The hotel plot concerns local development, not race, gender, sexuality, or identity politics.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Venice residents organize against a hotel project that would hurt local businesses and change the neighborhood. Chip first helps the project and later suffers when the community rejects him. Season 2 keeps the housing and development fallout in view as Chip loses his place to live. The show treats local control and resistance to new development as valid, but it does not build a broad attack on Western institutions.
