2019–2025 · Based on 7 seasons through October 30, 2025 ·
Brassic follows Vinnie O’Neill and his close group of friends in Hawley, a small northern English town. Vinnie lives with bipolar disorder while he and the gang deal drugs, steal, cheat, and take risky jobs to keep money coming in. Erin tries to build a safer life for her son, while the friends face crime bosses, family trouble, police, and the pull of growing up. The show mixes rude jokes, wild crime schemes, violence, and sudden sad moments with strong loyalty among the friends.
The show includes an openly gay gang member, Ash, and Tommo, who has sex with both men and women. Their sexuality is treated as a normal part of the group, not as a lesson or the main problem. Season seven adds Ally and her girlfriend Fay to a younger gang that competes with Vinnie's friends. The larger story stays focused on friendship, money, family, mental health, class, and surviving in a town with few good choices.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Brassic.
Woke representation / casting
The main gang is mostly white and fits the northern English setting. The show includes JJ and Meena as British Asian supporting gang members. Ash is a gay Irish Traveller, and Tommo has sex with men and women. Season seven adds Ally and her girlfriend Fay to a younger crime gang. The show does not market these choices as a diversity campaign, so the representation signal stays mild.
18%
Woke political dialogue
Farmer Jim repeatedly makes anti-woke jokes. In series five, he complains about being cancelled, Woke Wendy, the Snowflake Brigade, and school teaching that the world is round. The jokes mock modern sensitivity instead of giving a woke lesson. The show has no recurring speeches about DEI, identity politics, or activist causes.
5%
Identity-driven story themes
Ash's gay identity is a stable part of his role in the gang. Tommo's sex life includes both men and women, and later seasons give him a son and other personal plots. Season seven shows Ally and Fay as a couple while they lead a younger gang. These elements are treated as ordinary facts, while most stories remain about crime, friendship, family, and Vinnie's mental health. The show does not make queer identity the main premise.
22%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The gang scams rich people and clashes with police as part of comic crime plots. The show does not make a repeated modern activist attack on patriarchy, religion, or Western institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Brassic is an original story about Vinnie and his friends. It does not change established characters, source material, or real historical figures.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One Spectator Australia article attacked the show's mental-health focus as a woke concern and pointed to its mostly white cast. Several small X accounts later called the final season woke content or a woke gang. No large account, boycott, review-bombing drive, or organized campaign appeared. The backlash is real but fringe and often mixed with complaints that season seven was poorly made.

Creator track record context
Daniel Brocklehurst has spoken about getting more working-class people into television and about class barriers. Joseph Gilgun bases Vinnie partly on his own bipolar disorder and working-class life. Gilgun has said Ash and Tommo's sexuality is not a message, and the show should accept people as they are. The other cached writers and directors have little public activist or identity-driven history. This gives the title a mild class and personal context, not a strong activist pattern.
