2016–2017 · Based on 2 seasons through November 29, 2017 ·
Eldon Chance is a San Francisco doctor who studies how brain injury and mental illness affect behavior. In season one, his concern for abused patient Jaclyn Blackstone draws him into a fight with her violent husband, a corrupt police detective. Darius Pringle becomes Chance's dangerous partner as the doctor crosses lines he once respected. Season two turns the pair into secret fighters who target abusers while they hunt Ryan Winter, a rich tech boss suspected of several murders.
The strongest identity-focused material appears in a short season two story about Detective Hynes and Carl Allan. Hynes admits that he had feelings for a male murder victim, while Carl talks about being gay, losing his family, and finding safe gay bars as a black man in the 1970s. The show also uses a mixed cast in major medical and support roles, but race is not a main plot topic. Its larger message is about mental illness, violence, broken law systems, and the danger of using revenge as justice.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Chance.
Woke representation / casting
The cast gives several skilled support roles to minority characters. Suzanne Simms is a black female psychiatrist, while another woman of color holds a senior medical role in season two. Lucy Baek is a capable Korean American aide and single mother. Carl Allan is a black gay business owner and mentor, but the modern Bay Area setting makes the overall mix believable.
24%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue deals with crime, mental health, abuse, and personal guilt. The show does not use party slogans or activist speeches.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Season two gives Detective Hynes a multi-episode story about feelings for a male murder victim. Hynes says he had only dated women before he stopped fighting what he felt. Carl describes coming out, losing his family, and the limits faced by a black gay man in 1970s bars. This story affects Hynes's drive in the murder case, but it remains a support story.
32%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show repeatedly presents police, courts, and health systems as unable or unwilling to protect hurt people. A corrupt detective uses his badge to abuse Jaclyn in season one. A rich tech boss uses lawyers, money, donations, and official friends to block a murder case in season two. Chance and D answer these failures with violence, but the show treats their choice as dangerous.
34%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The adaptation does not make an identity-driven rewrite of an established character.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke reaction. Wider coverage focused on pacing, crime, and acting rather than woke or DEI complaints.
