Woke political dialogue
The show uses real political words. The bad guys are called the Sons of Themyscira. They look at the camera to complain about "woke feminists". They say that "men's rights" are being taken away. Other lines mock the government for making alliances just to get oil. In episode five, a character pretends to be a teacher. Identity-driven story themes
The story focuses on modern gender politics and identity. The relationship between Frankenstein and the Bride is changed. It becomes a story about a woman escaping a toxic, obsessive male stalker. In episode six, the Bride and Nina stay at a brothel. They beat up abusive men to teach a lesson about toxic masculinity. The main bad guys are a parody of internet incels and men's rights groups. One of them is literally named "Incel Son" and complains about women.

Western institutional / cultural critique
The show critiques government institutions. Amanda Waller is shown as corrupt. Her agency exploits legal loopholes to use monsters as disposable slaves because they lack human rights. The bad guys, the Sons of Themyscira, are a caricature of conservative groups in America. They wear red hats that look like Donald Trump's MAGA hats. The hats have the letters "SofT" on them to mock right-wing political groups.

Woke character or canon changes
The show changes comic book history to fit modern ideas. In the comics, the Sons of Themyscira are abandoned boys rescued by a god. In the show, they are turned into a silly group of internet incels and right-wingers. The romance between Frankenstein and the Bride is also changed. In the original comics, they were a loving couple. In this show, Frankenstein is turned into a delusional stalker so the Bride can be a strong, independent woman who does not need him.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
The show faced backlash from conservative and anti-woke viewers. Many complained that James Gunn used the show to push a left-wing agenda. They did not like how the show mocked right-wing groups and MAGA supporters. Some found the jokes about "woke feminists" and the lecture about lesbians to be annoying. Viewers also criticized how male characters like Frankenstein were written. They felt he was made into an annoying, foolish stalker just to make the female lead look better.

James Gunn wrote the show. He has a history of adding progressive themes and LGBTQ+ characters to his movies, though his early work used edgy humor. The rest of the crew has standard careers in animation, but producer Kandace Reuter previously produced the show *Velma*, which was heavily criticized for its aggressive progressive messaging.
