Earth Abides

The main arc is plague survival, family, and rebuilding. A clear side arc presents Ezra, Jean, and Molly as a happy throuple, with Jean and Molly as bisexual partners who call each other wife. That queer plot is audience-visible for much of the middle of the series and is listed in industry LGBTQ tracking. Identity is not the whole show, but the queer relationship is more than a one-line cameo.

Emma’s race follows the book’s partly Black Emma, so that is not a race-swap of a white character. The big identity shift is Ezra’s two wives from the novel becoming an on-screen bisexual throuple, with Jean and Molly framed as each other’s wives. That changes source polygamy into modern queer poly romance viewers can see on screen.

A modest set of posts and viewer notes call the casting and interracial lead DEI or “a little woke.” A few reject the show for race mix or agenda feel. There is no large sustained news-driven anti-woke campaign, so the score stays in the light-to-noticeable range.

Key cached scores are mostly near zero, with Hughes higher for humanitarian and underrepresented-story work. Komarnicki’s public line on this title is love, unity, and grace, not identity activism. Overall crew context is mild, not activist-led.
