2018–2021 · Based on 3 seasons through June 14, 2021 ·
Gary Goodspeed is a loud, silly astronaut finishing a prison sentence in space. He meets Mooncake, a small alien who can destroy planets, and they become best friends. A cruel enemy called the Lord Commander hunts them, and the crew later faces worse cosmic threats. The show mixes jokes, action, and heavy feelings about family, loss, and found friends. It runs three seasons and grows darker and more emotional as it goes.
Later seasons put more weight on strong female leads and on one clear queer story. Quinn is a sharp black scientist and fighter who often outthinks Gary and drives big plot choices. In season three, Ash falls for Evra, a genderless being, and the show treats that bond as romance. Creator talk and on-screen moments make Ash’s queer identity clear, but the main spine stays cosmic adventure and friendship, not politics speeches.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Final Space.
Woke representation / casting
Quinn is a main-cast black woman written as a brilliant scientist and fighter who often leads tough choices. Marketing and character blurbs call her a “brilliant badass.” The crew also includes other non-white voice leads in important roles. The future-space setting makes a mixed cast less odd, but Quinn’s hero-scientist role is a clear, easy-to-spot identity pattern.

Identity-driven story themes
The core story is saving the universe, friendship, and family pain. Season three adds a clear queer romance for Ash with genderless Evra, and Rogers confirmed Ash as LGBTQ and wanted to expand it. Clarence is also confirmed bisexual. These beats matter in later episodes and raise the score, but they are not the whole show.

Creator track record context
Lead creators Rogers and Sacks score low on activist history. Producer Conan O’Brien and writer Cameron Squires bring mild liberal or light progressive signals only. The team’s overall public record is not identity-first activism.
