2017 · Based on 1 season, 3 episodes through November 4, 2017 ·
Gunpowder follows Robert Catesby, an English Catholic gentleman who wants to kill King James I and destroy Parliament in 1605. The king's government hunts Catholic priests and punishes families who hide them, while Catesby gathers men for a violent attack. The story moves between country houses, prisons, foreign courts, and the tunnels below Parliament. The tone is grim, tense, and very violent, with torture and executions shown in detail.
One brief scene shows King James flirting with a male courtier, which gives the series a small LGBTQ element. The main social theme is religious persecution, as Catholics hide priests and face torture for refusing the state church. The story makes Catesby's anger understandable but shows his bombing plan as selfish, reckless, and harmful to the people he claims to defend. Anne Vaux and other women protect family and faith, while Robert remains the main driver of the action.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Gunpowder.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The principal cast fits a 1600s English and European Catholic setting. The series does not make modern diversity a casting message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue deals with Catholic persecution, royal power, spies, and a planned attack on Parliament. The characters do not use modern activist or identity-politics language.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Episode 1 shows King James flirting with Sir Philip Herbert, creating a brief same-sex element. The scene does not drive the plot or return as a main theme. The other identity conflict comes from Catholic persecution in the period.
10%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The Crown and Protestant officers use raids, torture, and executions against Catholics. The show treats this as the historical cause of Catesby's anger, not as a modern attack on Western culture or institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The series uses a fictional Lady Dorothy Dibdale and changes the story of Father John Gerard's capture and rescue. Those changes help shape the drama and do not carry a modern identity message.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Some coverage criticized the show's gore, pacing, or pro-Catholic historical balance. Those complaints did not say the show pushed woke, DEI, or modern identity politics.
