Joan follows a poor young mother in 1980s Kent and London. After her violent criminal partner leaves them in danger, Joan places her daughter Kelly in care and sets out to build a safer life. She learns how to steal diamonds, use disguises, and move through London's criminal world with Boisie, an antiques dealer. The six-part drama mixes family pain, romance, danger, glamour, and dark crime as Joan tries to win Kelly back. Joan presents its heroine as a woman who takes control in a world filled with cruel and careless men. Joan repeatedly outsmarts men, rejects control by Gary and Boisie, and ends by saying she will build an empire without men. The show also makes abuse, work harassment, and social services' judgment major forces in her rise. These ideas are tied to the central story, while the series stays focused on crime, family, and survival.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Joan.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The show follows the real white British woman Joan and mostly period-appropriate characters. Albie is a prominent black supporting criminal, but the story does not make his identity a theme or present the casting as a diversity message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Joan says she needs to run her own life after leaving Gary. Joan tells her father that parents should not beat children until they bleed. The final episode has Joan say she is done with men and will build an empire alone. These lines support female independence, but they do not become frequent political speeches.
28%
Identity-driven story themes
Joan's central arc is a woman escaping violent men and taking control of her future. Joan becomes the planner and face of repeated thefts, while Boisie teaches her the trade and later supports her risky plans. The story makes her ambition and skill exciting, and the ending has her choose to build an empire without men. The fight to recover Kelly keeps this female power story tied to the main plot.
55%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Social services repeatedly judge Joan as unstable and keep Kelly with a safer foster family. The story also shows an abusive partner, a leering boss, and male criminals who dismiss or threaten her. The show treats these barriers as reasons she turns to crime, but it does not make a broad attack on capitalism, religion, or Western institutions.
30%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show changes names, timing, and some crimes from the memoir, but those changes do not alter anyone's race, sex, or sexuality.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X check found no anti-woke complaints. Wider coverage shows praise, mixed reviews, and complaints about pacing, not woke or DEI messaging.

Creator track record context
Anna Symon has a mild record of supporting female voices, but little record of direct political activism. Producer Polly Hill has a stronger professional focus on inclusion and wider representation. Producer Neil Blair has a public record against woke culture. The other key people have low or modest identity-related records, so the overall creator signal stays mild.
