2021–2023 · Based on 3 seasons through March 8, 2023 ·
The CW series Kung Fu is a reimagining of the 1972 martial arts show. It follows Nicky Shen, a Chinese-American woman trained in Shaolin skills who returns to San Francisco Chinatown. She protects her family while fighting crime and dealing with mystical weapons. The story mixes action, family drama, Triad threats, and fantasy elements across three seasons and thirty nine episodes before it was canceled.
The show flips the original male lead into a modern female hero and puts an Asian American family at the center. A main cast brother is openly gay with multi season romance stories. Early episodes bring in union labor issues, workplace sexual abuse, and a police shooting protest arc. Later seasons lean more on family and mystical plots, but Asian family life and queer romance stay clear on screen. The creative team frames the series as reclaiming a whitewashed IP and offering a strong Asian female role model.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Kung Fu.
Woke representation / casting
The lead is a woman martial artist sold as a strong Asian role model. The mostly Asian cast is framed as a network first and a fix for whitewashing. A Chinatown setting makes the family cast feel natural, so identity framing plus the empowerment lead and a gay series-regular brother do most of the work.

Woke political dialogue
Season 1 often states progressive issues out loud. Episodes cover factory unions, bad workplaces, sexual abuse and NDAs, a police shooting of an unarmed black man, protests, and false arrest of an LGBTQ activist. Later seasons ease off weekly issues, but queer romance talk stays visible.
48%
Identity-driven story themes
The show is built as a reclaim of a whitewashed martial arts story with a Chinese-American woman hero and Asian family focus. Gay brother Ryan’s romance arcs run for multiple seasons and get heavy interview stress. Action and crime still drive many hours, so identity themes are strong and hard to miss without taking over every plot.
70%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Sanctuary treats police violence and media bias as system problems. Labor abuse and boss sexual abuse also show up. Most episodes still follow ordinary crime and Triad stories rather than a steady attack on Western faith or culture.
42%
Woke character or canon changes
The old male Shaolin wanderer becomes modern woman Nicky Shen. The non-Asian lead is replaced with an Asian cast and Asian showrunner on purpose. Creators and cast say this corrects whitewashing and gives the role model that should have been there, which goes past simple updating.
76%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Pushback is real but mostly online and niche. Critics use Woke Fu labels, YouTube hits on the gender swap, and get woke go broke style attacks. It is not a long national cable news war, but it is clearly anti-woke style anger.
30%
Creator track record context
Showrunner Christina M. Kim pushes Asian and gender representation. Producer Greg Berlanti is known for LGBTQ work, and writers like A.C. Allen and Robert Berens add progressive or queer-forward beats. Ed Spielman and some staff are low or neutral, so the room leans representation first without being fully activist.
