2018–2023 · Based on 5 seasons through July 19, 2023 ·
Mayans M.C. follows Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes, a former golden boy who leaves prison and joins his brother Angel in the Santo Padre Mayans. The club moves drugs across the California and Mexico border while EZ tries to balance family, club loyalty, revenge, and a secret deal with federal agents. The Galindo cartel, rival motorcycle clubs, and old family wounds keep pulling him deeper into violence. The series has a grim and bloody tone. The final season turns EZ’s rise as club president into a war with the Sons of Anarchy.
The show gives clear screen time to Mexican-American family life, border pressure, and people caught between the United States and Mexico. Adelita’s rebel movement and later cartel conflicts connect crime stories to power, immigration, and questions about who belongs where. Season 3 reveals that Taza once loved a man, and the secret shapes club violence and loyalty. Season 5 adds the all-female Broken Saints, whose leader protects people and animals while challenging the male clubs. These elements are visible and recurring, but the main engine remains crime, revenge, family, and motorcycle-club power.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Mayans M.C..
Woke representation / casting
The show uses a mostly Latino cast for a Mexican-American motorcycle club on the California-Mexico border, which fits its story world. Interviews also present the series as a chance to put Latino leads and writers at the center, even while J.D. Pardo rejected a quota-based version of Sons of Anarchy. The story gives major power roles to Adelita, Emily, Soledad, and Johnny Panic. Season 5 adds the all-female Broken Saints as a recurring club led by Johnny Panic. The Latino casting is story-matched, while the repeated female-leader pattern is the clearer representation signal.
35%
Woke political dialogue
Season 1 uses border militia scenes and direct talk about immigrants and the wall. Season 2 includes a human-trafficking rescue and a talk about ICE raids and border crackdowns. Season 3 makes a border shutdown, immigration arrests, and the club’s future central to the opening episodes. Seasons 4 and 5 move toward club war and cartel power, so political dialogue is recurring but not the show’s main mode.
35%
Identity-driven story themes
The show centers Mexican-American family ties, border life, and the struggle to choose between club identity and a safer life. Adelita’s rebel movement repeatedly links the crime story to cartel power, government pressure, and the treatment of people at the border. Season 3 reveals that Taza once loved David, and the secret drives betrayal and violence inside the clubs. Season 5 adds the all-female Broken Saints, whose members protect people and animals while challenging the male clubs. Crime, revenge, and family remain the main story, so identity-driven themes are meaningful but secondary.
32%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show often makes border enforcement and the U.S. government look abusive or self-serving. Season 1 uses a white-nationalist border gang as an enemy, and Season 2 shows immigration agents threatening Felipe’s family. Season 3 shows Border Patrol detaining people without legal papers after the border shuts down. Later seasons focus more on corrupt prison guards, cartel control, and club rivalries. The show’s institutional critique is clear in the repeated border and law-enforcement plots, but it is not a broad attack on capitalism or Christianity.
37%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show is a spin-off with new Mayans characters and new story lines in the Sons of Anarchy world. Returning Sons characters keep their established identities, and no identity-based rewrite of a legacy character drives the plot.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
NewsBusters called the border and immigration plots blatantly political and objected to their treatment of white-nationalist gangs and immigration enforcement. Television Heaven also said the show sided with immigrants and portrayed border authorities badly. Some Reddit viewers called the Season 5 Broken Saints and its female-leader dialogue woke or feminist. The supplied X pass found only one low-engagement aside that the show got a little woke near the end. No sustained boycott, review-bomb campaign, or large anti-woke movement appeared.

Creator track record context
Elgin James has a past in anti-racist hardcore activism and writes often about outsiders and street life. Kurt Sutter has liberal views and animal-rights activism, but he has said he avoids putting personal politics into his stories. Writer Andrea Ciannavei has Occupy and social-cause work, while writer Richard Cabral has prison-reform and mental-health activism. Most other cached key creatives have no strong identity-driven record. This gives supporting context, but the creative team does not have a uniformly strong woke track record.
