2017–2021 · Based on 3 seasons through December 3, 2021 · · Spanish
Money Heist follows the Professor, a careful planner who gathers criminals with nothing to lose. The first robbery traps the gang, hostages, and police inside Spain’s Royal Mint, while a later robbery moves to the Bank of Spain. Tokyo tells much of the story as the gang faces soldiers, police, rival criminals, and its own anger and fear. The show mixes tense action, romance, loud humor, sudden deaths, and plans that keep breaking apart.
The show gives several women major power in the gang and the police. Tokyo acts as a bold fighter and often speaks as the group’s leader, while Nairobi, Lisbon, Stockholm, and Sierra also make key choices and lead people. The story includes gay men, a past romance between Berlin and Palermo, and Manila, a trans woman who joins the gang. The gang also treats the state and financial system as enemies, uses Bella Ciao as a sign of resistance, and presents police abuse and public anger as reasons to oppose official power.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Money Heist.
Woke representation / casting
Women hold repeated front-line roles as Tokyo, Nairobi, Lisbon, Stockholm, and Sierra, while the show gives Tokyo the narrator role and makes several women leaders or fighters. Parts 3 to 5 add Manila, a trans woman, and keep gay men in the main gang, including Palermo and Helsinki. The Spanish setting makes the broad cast believable, and the series does not use a clear one-of-each racial design, so the score stays below the high range.
48%
Woke political dialogue
The Professor says the gang is not stealing from ordinary people because it prints money at the Mint and attacks the state instead. The gang and police repeatedly discuss resistance, austerity, torture, illegal detention, machismo, and prejudice. The show uses these ideas across the run, but most scenes still serve the robbery and do not stop for long speeches.
42%
Identity-driven story themes
Tokyo narrates the series and often acts as a leader who challenges male authority. Nairobi briefly takes control with the line about the matriarchy, while Lisbon, Stockholm, and Sierra repeatedly make major choices and lead others. The show also gives its gay and trans characters clear places in the gang, but the main story remains a crime thriller rather than a queer or feminist drama.
54%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The gang presents the state, banks, police, and military as powerful institutions that can abuse ordinary people. The Professor links the first heist to Spain’s 2011 anti-austerity protests, while later episodes expose Rio’s torture and Lisbon’s illegal detention. The story often treats official power as corrupt or cruel and the criminals as a form of resistance, although it also shows the gang’s violence and selfishness.
58%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Money Heist is an original series with no established source characters or real historical cast to rewrite.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A small number of forum posts called the later parts forced or woke because of the trans character, feminist lines, and jokes about men. One French user review called the show woke propaganda and attacked gender themes and strong women. The wider reaction centered on plot quality, deaths, and fan love for the gang, so this backlash was scattered rather than a major news story.
24%
Creator track record context
The key creative team has a mixed record. Álex Pina is mainly known for anti-establishment crime stories and has little clear activist work, while Colmenar and Vivas often use strong women or social pressure in genre stories. Alex Rodrigo, Sonia Martínez, and some casting staff have stronger links to political or representation-focused work, but most writers and directors have no clear activist public profile.
