2018–2024 · Based on 2 seasons through January 7, 2024 · · Turkish
Persona follows Agâh Beyoğlu, a 65-year-old retired court clerk in Istanbul who learns that he has Alzheimer’s disease. He uses the fear of forgetting to carry out a private murder list linked to an old crime in the small town of Kambura. Police officer Nevra Elmas follows the killings while her own lost memories connect her to the same case. The first season mixes grim crime, dark humor, family drama, and mystery, while the second season brings Agâh’s family into a new fight with Kader, a killer from his past.
The show gives clear weight to sexual violence, silence, and failed justice in its first season. Nevra is the only woman in her homicide unit, and male officers question her place while she works to uncover the truth about a girl harmed in Kambura. A short first-season story also presents Naz as a trans woman, although the character is treated as a tragic and violent side figure. The second season shifts toward 1990s disappearances, families seeking missing relatives, the Kurdish language, and state cover-ups, so its social and political themes become more direct.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Persona.
Woke representation / casting
Persona places a prominent woman, Nevra, as the only female officer in a large homicide unit, and the show makes that gender contrast part of her story. Season one also includes Naz, a trans woman, in a short side plot, with Recep Sarı playing the role. Most of the cast otherwise fits the Turkish setting, so the show does not present a broad identity-based ensemble.
32%
Woke political dialogue
The show gives several lines in which male officers question why a woman holds a police job and call her appointment positive discrimination. Nevra also offers a private phone line for women who have faced harassment or rape. Season two includes court words that deny a Kurdish-speaking woman’s language and label it unknown. These lines make gender, language, and state power visible inside the crime plot.
48%
Identity-driven story themes
Season one ties Agâh’s murder list to a girl’s sexual abuse and the people who helped silence the crime. Nevra’s struggle against male officers gives the season a continuing gender theme. Season two shifts to missing people, Kurdish language, and families seeking truth after state-linked killings. These ideas shape both seasons, but the show still tells a murder mystery and does not make queer identity its main subject.
56%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Season one shows a court and police unit failing women after a serious sex crime. Season two shows state-linked killers, prosecutors, and courts hiding or ignoring 1990s disappearances. The finale shows a judge stopping a Kurdish-speaking woman and recording her language as unknown. The critique is strong and repeated, but it is tied to Turkish history and local power.
54%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Persona is an original Turkish crime story, not a remake or a canon adaptation. Its references to real 1990s events do not change a known character’s identity.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X review found no anti-woke complaints, and other public discussion did not show a sustained campaign. Public debate focused on the trans portrayal, the Kurdish-language scene, and mixed views of season two.
0%
Creator track record context
Hakan Günday’s wider work often covers migration, violence, authoritarian power, and people harmed by social systems. Onur Saylak’s wider work often covers political violence, migration, class pressure, and failed institutions. The other listed producers and casting directors have no strong activist or DEI public record in the supplied context. The main authors support a social-critique tone, but they do not show a clear identity-campaign brand.
