2020 · Based on 1 season, 6 episodes through November 29, 2020 ·
Grace Fraser is a successful Manhattan therapist. She shares a polished Upper East Side life with her oncologist husband Jonathan and their son Henry. After Elena Alves is murdered, Jonathan is revealed as her lover, the father of her infant, and ultimately her killer. The six-episode limited series works as a thriller about willful blindness. It asks what people choose to believe about marriage, charm, and class.
The white elite leads match the setting and source material. Supporting roles include a high-powered black defense attorney, a Latino detective, a black female judge, and an Asian socialite friend. Elena kisses Grace on the lips and shows same-sex desire and obsession toward her, but this is not a full LGBTQ identity arc. Class, wealth, elite private-school culture, and justice for the rich appear on screen. The story engine is murder and marital deception, not sustained race or gender ideology speeches.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Undoing.
Woke representation / casting
The white leads fit the Upper East Side story and source. A clear identity signal is Noma Dumezweni as a brilliant black female attorney in a high-status role, with other competent minority professionals nearby. Elena’s same-sex kiss is a small queer beat. The mix is limited and fits modern New York more than a forced friend group.
28%
Woke political dialogue
A few lines touch class and wealth, such as rich clients getting legal cover and elite-school status. The show does not feature ongoing activist DEI talk. It also lacks systemic-racism or identity-politics speeches as a main trait.
8%
Identity-driven story themes
The spine is murder, marital fraud, and self-deception among the rich, not identity politics. Mild privilege and class framing is familiar prestige-TV material. Elena’s same-sex kiss and obsession with Grace is visible but incidental and does not make the series queer-centered.
22%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show mocks Upper East Side wealth, elite schooling, and justice money can buy. Jonathan is a charming, entitled male predator. That is class satire and classic thriller villainy, not an activist attack on whiteness, patriarchy as a system, or Christianity.
20%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Not a woke or DEI rewrite. Adaptation expands Jonathan and the mystery. Removing much of the novel’s Jewish cultural texture is not scored here as progressive identity change.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No meaningful anti-woke or right-leaning backlash treated the series as DEI propaganda. Reception focused on performances, plot, and style. Jewish-erasure complaints are excluded under the rules.

Creator track record context
Cached scores for Bier, Kelley, Korelitz, producers, and casting directors sit low, roughly from about three to fourteen. There is no clear pattern of activist or identity-first work tied to this production’s leaders.
