2025 · Based on 1 season, 8 episodes through March 5, 2025 ·
Prime Target follows Edward Brooks, a gifted but rude math student at Cambridge. He thinks he has found a pattern in prime numbers that could open every computer in the world. After his supervisor burns his work and dies, Edward is chased by the NSA, a private company, and people who want his discovery. He joins Taylah Sanders, an NSA agent who doubts her own bosses, and the pair move from England to France, Iraq, and back to Britain while they uncover a long conspiracy. The show has a serious spy-thriller tone, with bursts of action, mystery, and dark humor.
Edward has a recurring gay relationship with the bartender Adam. The story also makes Taylah, played by non-binary actor Quintessa Swindell, a second queer lead and a skilled NSA agent. The show treats these identities as normal parts of the characters rather than as a lesson, but the gay relationship returns across the season and affects Edward’s choices. Its main message is about the danger of secret power, surveillance, and science used by governments and private firms. It does not build its plot around race, feminism, or a larger activist campaign.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Prime Target.
Woke representation / casting
Prime Target places a black non-binary actor in the co-lead role of Taylah, a highly skilled NSA agent. The show also gives major authority roles to women, including NSA leader Jane and scholar Andrea. It includes a black male professor and other international characters in important roles. The repeated identity focus in leading roles is audience-visible throughout the season.
45%
Woke political dialogue
The series repeatedly talks about government surveillance, hidden deaths, and the danger of officials controlling secret science. The finale says powerful institutions can use secret systems to hide crimes, while Alderman wants to break banks and missile systems to start a revolution. These ideas give the thriller a mild anti-authority edge. The show does not use identity politics or activist speeches as its main dialogue.
16%
Identity-driven story themes
Edward’s gay relationship with bartender Adam begins in the first episode and returns later as a real emotional subplot. Adam’s betrayal and Edward’s attempt to reconnect with him affect Edward’s choices during the conspiracy. Taylah is also presented as a queer co-lead. The series treats queer identity as normal, but the main story remains about math, surveillance, and secret power.
42%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The story repeatedly shows the NSA watching mathematicians, hiding deaths, and working with a private firm. The finale says governments can use secret systems to hide their worst crimes and leaves a corrupt NSA leader in power. This is a warning about surveillance and abuse of power, but it is not a broad attack on Western culture, religion, family, or traditional gender roles. Its main purpose is to drive the conspiracy plot.
18%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Prime Target is an original series with no book, franchise, or historical character to rewrite. Its characters are part of the story’s own setup.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A conservative media host called the show “gay propaganda” and the “gay WOKE agenda.” Replies and other viewers complained that it pushed gay content and said they quit early. One viewer mocked an AI recommendation because the show had a gay lead, a black woman hero, and a woman running the NSA. The reaction was noticeable but scattered, with no organized boycott or review-bombing drive.
35%
Creator track record context
Steve Thompson has the strongest social-justice context among the core team. His public record includes discussion of racism, the Windrush scandal, and racial justice after his brother’s wrongful detention. Selina Lim and Thomas Martin have little public activist history, and Brady Hood has no clear identity-driven record. Thompson’s Prime Target interviews focus on math and dangerous knowledge, so this context supports the score but does not define the show.
