2018 · Based on 1 season, 8 episodes through May 10, 2018 ·
Safe follows Tom Delaney, a widowed children's doctor who is raising two teenage daughters in a wealthy gated community in England. When his older daughter Jenny disappears after a house party, Tom searches for her while police detectives Sophie Mason and Emma Castle investigate the missing boy who was last seen with her. Tom's search exposes hidden affairs, old friendships, lies, and a deadly secret shared by several people in the neighborhood. The show mixes family grief with a crime mystery and often feels tense, dark, and like a soap opera.
The clearest audience-visible identity element is Pete Mayfield, Tom's gay best friend and fellow doctor. Pete's sexuality is openly stated, and his past relationship leads to a late family connection with Emma. The show also places two women in important detective roles and includes families and neighbors from different backgrounds. The main story centers on grief, family secrets, privacy, guilt, and the false promise of safety.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Safe.
Woke representation / casting
Pete Mayfield is an openly gay doctor and Tom's best friend, so the show has a clear LGBTQ presence in a recurring supporting role. Pete's sexuality connects to his past relationship with Emma's mother. Two women serve as important police detectives, and the modern English setting includes families from different backgrounds. The show presents these choices as parts of the characters, not as a repeated diversity message.
20%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. Reviews and plot summaries contain no reports of explicit political speeches, activist rhetoric, institutional critiques framed through identity lenses, or ideological messaging. Dialogue serves the mystery and personal drama.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Pete's gay identity is part of a small family subplot. The show uses his earlier relationship with Emma's mother to explain their late reunion and Emma's pregnancy. The plot treats this as a personal secret inside the mystery. The rest of the season follows grief, lies, guilt, and a missing-child case rather than identity politics.
18%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present in this title.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Safe is an original creation by Harlan Coben, not an adaptation involving changes to established characters, canon, or historical figures for identity or DEI reasons.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One negative audience review called Pete a token gay character and said the plot felt forced. That comment treated the gay character as an unwanted identity addition. Other public comments focused on the mystery, weak logic, pacing, or Michael C. Hall's accent. No major news report or organized campaign accused the series of pushing woke politics.
14%
Creator track record context
Harlan Coben mainly writes thrillers and usually keeps politics out of his stories. Daniel Brocklehurst has a mild background in dramas about social problems. Nicola Shindler has a stronger queer and diversity record through projects such as Queer as Folk and It's a Sin. Michael C. Hall has spoken about his sexuality and climate activism, while the directors and Richard Fee have little public record of activism. The current Safe interviews focus on family, privacy, and suspense, so the stronger creator history is only supporting context.
