2017–2019 · Based on 3 seasons through March 29, 2019 ·
Santa Clarita Diet is a Netflix comedy-horror series about a suburban realtor mom who turns undead. Her husband and daughter help hide the bloody fallout of her new condition. The show blends zombie lore with family life and crime comedy. Later seasons add hunters, darker stakes, and more side stories, but the heart stays the undead mom and the people who love her.
Viewers can clearly see Sheila change from a meek people-pleaser into a bold, sexually free woman, and the story treats that shift as female empowerment. Her daughter Abby also pushes for more agency of her own. Seasons two and three include a recurring lesbian couple, Deputy Anne Garcia and Lisa Palmer. A teen eco plot has Abby and Eric bomb a fracking site, with FBI trouble later. Soft jabs at suburban manners, a dirty cop, and Anne’s comic faith also appear. The show is still mostly a zombie family comedy, yet the empowerment arc and the lesbian story are plain on screen.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Santa Clarita Diet.
Woke representation / casting
The main family is a white suburban realtor household that fits Santa Clarita. Supporting roles show a clear modern SoCal mix across Latino, Black, and Asian characters. That mix looks like Netflix-era diversity in recurring parts. Most of those roles are not driven by identity as the story’s main need.
24%
Woke political dialogue
There is little long activist speech. Talk more often covers gray choices about killing bad people, suburban manners, and family logistics. Light talk about the fracking bombing fallout and Anne’s faith appears at times. It is not heavy slogan politics.
18%
Identity-driven story themes
Sheila’s undead turn is framed as female empowerment from meek people-pleaser to bold, sexually free woman. Daughter Abby also shows growing agency. A recurring lesbian couple appears in seasons two and three. A teen eco plot bombs a fracking site, while the main show stays a zombie family crime comedy.
52%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show lightly mocks suburban conformity, consumer culture, a corrupt cop, and fracking. Anne’s strong Christianity is often played for comedy. Gary’s assault attempt feeds Sheila’s fight-back more than a full system lecture. The critique leans liberal but is not the whole show.
30%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. This is an original series with no adapted canon rewritten for identity politics.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No meaningful anti-woke or propaganda-style campaign was found. Coverage focused on gore, tone, cancellation, and feminist framing notes.
0%
Creator track record context
Showrunner Victor Fresco links the show to female empowerment versus narcissism. That matches progressive gender themes on screen. Steve Pink is left-leaning. Most other writers and producers have low scores and no strong activist profile.
