2022 · Based on 1 season, 8 episodes through September 1, 2022 ·
A 10th-anniversary trip to a resort in Mexico exposes the weak state of Emma and Noah's marriage. Emma finds an old phone linked to two young visitors who vanished in 2007. The couple follows the clues through ruined hotels, a powerful family, strange time ideas, and a hidden cave. The show mixes dry comedy, romance, mystery, grief, and light science fiction.
The clearest identity-focused content is a short appearance by the Teds, a married gay couple who treat marriage as a contract and test it every seven years. The show places a black man and a white woman at the center of a marriage, while Emma takes more risks and Noah often urges care. The Teds give the main couple another way to think about marriage, but the season spends most of its time on lost time, child loss, grief, memory, and whether people should chase the past.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Resort.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The show uses a black husband, a white wife, Mexican resort staff, and a married gay couple. These choices fit the modern resort setting, and the story does not frame them as a diversity message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue centers on marriage, grief, time, memory, and the mystery. It does not build a recurring activist or identity-politics argument.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The show gives a short but clear subplot to the Teds, a married gay couple who treat marriage as a contract and test their bond every seven years. Their view gives Emma and Noah a different model for a lasting relationship. The main story follows grief, child loss, memory, and lost time rather than identity politics. The LGBTQ+ material is visible but small, so the score stays low.
12%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The resort and its wealthy guests support mild comedy about vacation life. The plot does not turn that material into a recurring attack on capitalism, family life, religion, or Western institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The Resort is an original story about a modern couple and an invented mystery. It does not adapt a known character, book, real figure, or historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Reviewed news and public discussions focused on the mystery, strange twists, pacing, and the ending. No meaningful anti-woke, anti-DEI, or identity-politics backlash was reported.
0%
Creator track record context
The key creative group is mixed. Andy Siara's title interviews focus on nostalgia, home, grief, and time, while his public work is mostly comedy and relationship stories. Ben Sinclair has the strongest progressive representation history through High Maintenance, and Sam Esmail often criticizes powerful systems. Most other credited creators show little public activist work, so this is mild supporting context.
