2023–2025 · Based on 2 seasons through July 23, 2025 ·
The show follows two married couples in a rich Yorkshire street where private desires break through polite suburb life. In season one, teacher Evie and journalist Pete move in after a painful pregnancy loss and meet open-marriage couple Danny and Becka. Evie starts an affair with Danny, while Pete grows jealous and a lonely neighbor stalks Becka. In season two, heart surgeon Charlotte and anesthesia doctor Jacob face a new threat when nurse Mia moves next door and draws both of them into a dangerous affair. The tone is glossy, sexual, dark, and full of sudden crime twists.
The strongest woke material comes from the show's repeated push against strict marriage rules and expected gender behavior. Both seasons treat open relationships, partner swapping, and sexual self-discovery as major story engines, while several men are shown as jealous, weak, controlling, or dangerous. Season two makes a woman-to-woman sexual relationship part of the central triangle and presents Charlotte as a powerful surgeon who questions the life she built. The show also attacks religious pressure around IVF and uses sexist men, stalking, abuse, and male control as clear threats, although these ideas stay inside a wild relationship thriller rather than a political drama.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Couple Next Door.
Woke representation / casting
Season one gives Alfred Enoch, a black British actor, a main role as Pete in a mixed-race couple. Season two adds black nurse Mia, Black hospital worker Yvonne, and South Asian character Leo in major roles. The show takes place in present-day Britain, where a mixed cast is believable, and it does not sell these choices as a diversity campaign. The repeated prominent casting is noticeable, but it does not look like a one-of-each design.
24%
Woke political dialogue
Season one has Evie's parents say that her pregnancy loss was God's punishment for IVF. Evie rejects their religious judgment and calls their belief system a cult. Season two has a patient make sexist remarks to Mia, and Mia calls him a sexist pervert after he dies. The show also has characters talk about male control, sexual choice, and the pressure to behave properly. These lines recur in story scenes, but the show does not stop for long political speeches.
34%
Identity-driven story themes
The series makes non-monogamy, partner swapping, and sexual self-discovery major story engines in both seasons. Season one follows Evie as she breaks from a strict Christian home and chases a new sexual life with Danny. Season two builds its main triangle around Mia having sex with Charlotte and Jacob while Charlotte questions the life she built. The story often treats strict marriage rules and expected gender roles as limits that characters should test. The thriller eventually punishes many choices, so the message is mixed rather than a simple celebration.
58%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Season one presents a strict Christian family as shaming and controlling when it calls IVF a sin. Season one also treats Pete's jealousy, Danny's macho image, and Alan's stalking as harmful forms of male control. Season two shows sexist treatment of Mia and a therapist who grooms and traps her. The show questions suburbia, marriage rules, status, and the need to act like a proper man or woman. The hospital and rich donors face ordinary corruption, but the story does not turn that into a broad attack on capitalism.
45%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The series uses new characters in a loose adaptation of other European shows. No identity-based change to an established character or real person is reported.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Reviews and fan posts mostly discuss the sex, affairs, twists, and acting. A small number of traditional-minded viewers disliked the swinger premise, but no strong title-specific complaint called the show woke, DEI, or political.

Creator track record context
Director Dries Vos and writer David Allison have low cached scores and no clear activist public profile. Most cached producers also have low scores. Producers Dimitri Verbeeck and Robin Kerremans, along with casting directors Sien Josephine Teijssen and Rae Hendrie, have repeated work linked to wider representation. The mixed record gives supporting context, but it does not show a strong activist team behind this title.
