2021 · Based on 1 season, 8 episodes through April 30, 2021 · · Spanish
Mateo Vidal is a young man who accidentally kills another man during a nightclub fight in Barcelona. After four years in prison, he marries Olivia and tries to build a quiet life with her. A strange call from Olivia pulls him into a web of murder, blackmail, hidden identities, and police corruption. The dark eight-part thriller moves between the present and the past as each person reveals another secret.
The show gives a large part of its story to Olivia, Emma, and Kimmy, three women who were trapped in a violent sex club and abused by rich and powerful men. They plan an escape, hide their pasts, and use evidence against the people who hurt them. Lorena, a murder detective, and Zoe, a private investigator, also solve major parts of the case. These survivor and female-strength themes repeat across the season, alongside crime, guilt, revenge, and second chances.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Innocent.
Woke representation / casting
Several prominent women carry the investigation, including Lorena as a murder detective and Zoe as a private investigator. Olivia, Emma, and Kimmy also drive the main mystery as survivors who make major choices. The cast is mainly Spanish and fits a modern Spanish crime story, and the show does not market its casting as a diversity campaign.
24%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue focuses on crime, sex trafficking, guilt, police corruption, and revenge. The season has no recurring lines about modern identity, DEI, gender politics, or activist causes.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The season follows Olivia, Emma, and Kimmy through a long story about sex work, captivity, abuse, and escape. The women plan their escape and use recorded tapes to fight back against Aníbal and his powerful clients. Lorena and Zoe also solve major parts of the case while several male police figures lie, abuse power, or fail. The show gives these women survivor and empowerment roles across several episodes, but it keeps the message inside a crime story instead of making a direct activist argument.
43%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The show has corrupt police officers, an abusive pimp, and wealthy criminals, but they are individual villains in the crime plot. The season does not turn them into a modern argument about capitalism, patriarchy, Christianity, or traditional family life.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The adaptation moves the story from New Jersey to Barcelona and changes the structure and ending. No confirmed race, gender, sexuality, or identity swap changes an established character in the adaptation.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Public posts and reviews mainly discuss Mario Casas, the twists, the acting, the pacing, and the graphic crime content. The reviewed coverage contains no clear anti-woke complaint about DEI, identity politics, or activist messaging.
0%
Creator track record context
Guillem Clua has a strong history of queer-centered plays and public work about LGBTQ representation. Oriol Paulo has discussed gender equality and his wish to create strong female leads. Jordi Vallejo and Harlan Coben have little high-confidence record of activist or identity-focused work. This mix adds some context, but The Innocent uses the creators' thriller and crime interests more clearly than their identity-focused work.
