2022–2024 · Based on 2 seasons through January 3, 2024 ·
George Addo is a London app developer whose happy life breaks when time resets erase his marriage, career success, and future child. George remembers each reset, so a secret team recruits him to prevent wars, pandemics, and threats to human survival. George breaks the team’s rules by starting a nuclear war to save Sarah, the woman he loves. Season two follows a rival group that builds another time machine and traps the world in a three-week loop. The story stays tense and violent while exploring love, guilt, loyalty, and the cost of changing the past.
The clearest woke element is a same-sex romance between Archie and Zhang Rhui in season two. Archie kisses Zhang Rhui, begins a relationship with her, and works beside her during dangerous missions. The show also gives women and minority characters major roles in command, science, and action, including Wes as leader and Janet and Dr. Gray as scientists. These choices are easy to see, but the main story does not focus on identity politics or activist speeches. The show mainly follows time travel, nuclear danger, secret groups, and the personal damage caused by changing events.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Lazarus Project.
Woke representation / casting
The show places women and minority actors in visible command, science, and field roles. George is a black lead, Shiv is a South Asian agent, Wes leads Lazarus, and Janet and Dr. Gray are important scientists. These roles remain important across both seasons. The story does not present the casting as a diversity campaign or identity statement.

Identity-driven story themes
Season two gives Archie and Zhang Rhui a recurring romantic story line. The women flirt, kiss, sleep together, and work as partners during dangerous missions. The relationship appears across several episodes, but it stays separate from the main time travel conflict. The show does not make queer identity the central message of the series.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few small X accounts complained that the show “went gay” or included unnecessary lesbian scenes. Another small account used “diversity chick” while discussing a female cast member. The posts had only about one to three likes, and no major right leaning outlet, boycott, or mass review attack appeared. The reaction was fringe noise rather than a broad anti woke campaign.

Creator track record context
Joe Barton has no documented history of strong political activism. Howard Overman has written LGBTQ and female-led stories while avoiding heavy political moralizing. Several producers have worked on LGBTQ-focused shows, including Sugar Rush and Lost Boys & Fairies. Most directors have little or no recorded activist history, so the overall signal is mild.
