Patrick Sumner is a disgraced army surgeon who joins a whaling ship in 1859. He hopes the Arctic voyage will help him escape his past. Instead, he faces Henry Drax, a brutal killer, while the ship’s crew battles hunger, ice, greed, and betrayal. The show is bleak, violent, and often disturbing.
The show includes a gay crew member who is falsely blamed for a murder because of his sexuality. It also shows British racism in India, colonial attitudes toward Inuit people, and a missionary trying to convert them. The story repeatedly examines violent male behavior and the damage caused by pride, greed, and abuse of power. These ideas support some modern identity and social criticism, but they remain part of a historical survival story rather than its main purpose.

Woke political dialogue
Sumner’s memories show British racism and violence during the Siege of Delhi. The priest speaks about converting Inuit people to Christianity. These ideas are clear but appear in a historical setting rather than as repeated modern political speeches.
18%
Identity-driven story themes
The show includes a gay crew member who is falsely blamed for murder because of his sexuality. The story shows open homophobia and the danger faced by a man accused of being gay. It also explores colonial attitudes toward Inuit people and the harsh treatment of people seen as outsiders. These themes matter, but the main story remains about survival and revenge.
32%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show presents British military power, wealthy ship owners, and church missions as harmful or self-serving. It also shows male authority breaking down through violence, greed, and sexual abuse. The criticism is tied to the 1850s setting and does not become a broad modern attack on Western society.

Creator track record context
Andrew Haigh has a strong history of queer stories and public support for gay representation. That context fits the show’s focus on homophobia and male intimacy. The series itself is not mainly a queer story, so his past work is supporting context rather than the main content.
