2019–2020 · Based on 2 seasons through June 19, 2020 ·
Payton Hobart is a rich California student who has planned his life around becoming president. He starts by running for student body president at Saint Sebastian while trying to get into Harvard and control every part of his public image. His team includes his girlfriend Alice, strategists McAfee and James, and later former rivals such as Astrid and Skye. The show mixes dark jokes, songs, sex scandals, suicide, attempted murder, and very rich people behaving badly.
Across both seasons, the show makes identity and modern social causes part of its election games. Season one includes Payton's past relationship with River, Skye as a black gender-nonconforming student, a same-sex relationship involving McAfee and Skye, and repeated jokes about political correctness and cancel culture. Season two makes climate change a main campaign issue and adds zero-waste stunts, cultural appropriation arguments, sex positivity, a secret three-person relationship, and an abortion plot. The series often mocks people who use these causes for votes, but it still presents queer life, gender freedom, and climate activism as normal parts of its world.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Politician.
Woke representation / casting
The show places identity-marked characters in the main campaign circle. Skye is a Black, gender-nonconforming student who becomes a visible candidate and adviser. The core group also includes several queer or gender-fluid characters in major roles. Interviews about the show linked its cast to Ryan Murphy's diversity and inclusion approach.
43%
Woke political dialogue
The campaigns repeatedly use modern social causes as policy and messaging. Season one includes gun control, political correctness, a homophobic slur scandal, and speeches about women's safety. Season two centers Payton's push on climate change and adds zero-waste stunts, cultural appropriation arguments, and sex positivity. The show mocks campaign posing, but these subjects return often enough to shape the political story.
42%
Identity-driven story themes
The show treats queer and gender-fluid life as a normal part of its main group. Payton's past relationship with River drives grief, guilt, and his struggle to understand himself. Skye is a gender-nonconforming lesbian who stays inside the campaign's inner circle. Season two adds Dede's polyamorous relationship and Astrid's abortion, so personal identity and sexual freedom recur beyond one subplot.
50%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Season one uses Skye's women's safety vigil and the Sloane family's male entitlement to question old gender habits. Season two treats Dede's long rule as an outdated old guard and lets young voters push climate action and open relationships. A nonbinary adviser also calls out Payton's privilege and his empty eco promises. The show makes these points through jokes and hypocrisy, so the critique is recurring but not a full activist program.
30%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The Politician is an original series with fictional characters. It does not change established canon or real historical events.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Public debate centered on plot quality, political satire, and the large queer cast. No major title-specific anti-woke complaint or campaign was found.
0%
Creator track record context
Ryan Murphy has a strong record of identity-driven shows and diversity efforts, including Pose and the Half program. Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan are known for Glee and other projects with LGBTQ+ and social themes. Ben Platt has publicly supported queer representation and better casting of queer actors. The Politician uses the same queer and social themes, so the creator context strongly matches the show.
