2021–2023 · Based on 2 seasons through August 16, 2023 ·
Dean Williams is a bright, imaginative 12-year-old growing up in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1968 and 1969. He lives with his parents, Bill and Lillian, his brother Bruce, and his sister Kim in a proud black middle-class family. Dean deals with school, friends, first love, family arguments, and the fear caused by racism and war. His adult voice looks back with warmth, humor, and some sadness as the family moves through a changing country.
The show makes black family life and race a central part of its story, not a small side detail. Dean tries to bring black and white children together in baseball, faces the limits placed on black families, and watches his parents handle work, housing, school, and police issues. Later episodes add a drag performer in New York and stories about integration, a local political campaign, and a woman's place at work. These ideas appear beside ordinary family comedy, but the show's identity and its message about race and acceptance shape much of the viewer's experience.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Wonder Years.
Woke representation / casting
The series puts a black family in every major family role and makes that choice part of its public identity. The show gives Dean, Bill, Lillian, Kim, and Bruce the main capable and heroic roles. The setting makes a black middle-class family believable, so the casting is not a historical mismatch. The repeated goal of showing an overlooked black experience makes representation a clear production priority.
45%
Woke political dialogue
The show repeatedly discusses race and public life in the late 1960s. Dean hears a police safety talk, tries to integrate a baseball game, and deals with school and neighborhood barriers. Other episodes cover the civil rights era, Vietnam, a local election, and housing fights. The dialogue usually presents these issues as part of the period, but the repeated race-focused lessons are easy to notice.
38%
Identity-driven story themes
The show's central story is a black boy growing up while his family explains what race changes in daily life. Dean faces race-based limits at school, in sports, in neighborhoods, and around the police. Lillian's work life and the family's move toward an integrated neighborhood add stories about Black advancement and unfair barriers. Season 2 also gives a full premiere subplot to Lonnie, a drag performer, and treats acceptance as the right response. These themes sit beside dating, jokes, music, and family problems, but identity remains a major part of the series.
62%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show presents police danger, families leaving neighborhoods, unfair housing sales, and unfair treatment of a working mother. The story often shows schools, landlords, workplaces, and public leaders as institutions that can limit the Williams family. Season 2 also asks Bill and Dean to accept a drag performer and shows a local political campaign. These conflicts mostly fit the 1960s setting, so the show is less focused on broad modern attacks on Western institutions.
30%
Woke character or canon changes
The series replaces the original show's white Arnold family with the black Williams family. The new family lives in Montgomery, Alabama, and the story centers Black middle-class life during the civil rights era. The creators kept the coming-of-age format and some links to the old show, but the race and social viewpoint are a major new identity choice. The change is central to the series and was highlighted in its public promotion.
65%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Small right-leaning and anonymous X accounts called the show a woke or blackwashed remake. Other posts called it an unnecessary race swap and said the original white cast should have been remade. The posts had little engagement and did not form a large campaign, boycott, or review-bombing push. Mainstream coverage was mostly about the show's black family focus, not a major culture-war fight.
15%
Creator track record context
Patterson is known for racial representation and black family stories. Daniels has a strong record of black and queer representation. Several other credited people have mixed or low identity-focused records. The strongest creator context matches the show's Black middle-class focus and its public message about representation.
