2019–2022 · Based on 3 seasons through September 26, 2022 ·
This three-season sci-fi drama is set in modern Britain and France after aliens almost wipe out the human race. Survivors include scientist Bill Ward, French astronomer Catherine Durand, blind teenager Emily Gresham, and Kariem, a young man who entered England without papers. Alien machines hunt the living while small groups try to stay alive and learn why Earth was attacked. The tone is slow, tense, and grim rather than a big battle show.
Kariem’s path as a refugee is a clear part of the human drama, and Emily forms a romantic bond with him. Catherine is a lead female scientist who first finds the alien signal and helps fight back. The show also deals with fear of outsiders and asks whether people treat those who are different with care or hate. These social threads sit beside the invasion plot and stay visible across the seasons without taking over every scene.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for War of the Worlds.
Woke representation / casting
The modern UK and France cast puts several identity-marked figures in major roles. Kariem is a black refugee with a large arc and a romance with Emily. Catherine is a lead female scientist, Colonel Mokrani is a North African French military leader, and Zoe (Pearl Chanda) becomes important in later seasons. The mix looks like a clear diversity pattern rather than a neutral background detail.
36%
Woke political dialogue
Characters talk about war, who counts as the enemy, and how people treat outsiders. Emily compares human war killings to the aliens’ violence. The talk is light and mixed into survival scenes rather than long activist speeches.
18%
Identity-driven story themes
Kariem’s illegal entry and refugee status are built into the plot, and the show pushes the idea that after the attack everyone is a stranger seeking safety. Fear of difference and soft empathy for “the other,” including the aliens, is a repeating idea. A rape-and-family trauma line for Chloe also stays in the human drama. These themes are easy to notice but do not replace the alien-invasion story.
44%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Soldiers cruelly handle captured alien machines in a way that calls up modern abuse-of-power images. The story also frames tribal suspicion of difference as a human failing and shows male sexual violence inside a family. The focus stays on survival and war morals more than on a full attack on Western faith or markets.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Some viewers and posts object to refugee messaging and call the series woke or agenda-driven. The complaints are real but small and scattered, with little major news pushback aimed at this specific show.
16%
Creator track record context
Overman wrote the series and brings a mid-level pattern of diverse casts and social themes without hardline activist branding. Supporting directors are mostly low on identity politics, with one higher-scoring director known for queer work on other titles. The overall creative signal sits in the low-to-mid range.
