40 Acres follows Hailey Freeman, a former soldier who runs a farm and trains her family to fight. Her family descends from Black farmers who escaped slavery and settled in rural Canada after the Civil War. Fourteen years after a plague kills most animals, famine and war leave farms as prized targets. Hailey must defend the land from cannibals while her son Manny starts to question her strict rules and isolation.
The film makes black and Indigenous family history part of the survival story. The title points to the broken promise of “40 acres and a mule,” and the family protects both its land and its cultural memory. Hailey teaches history, the family uses Cree, and the plot asks whether safety requires shutting out the wider community. The story also presents a strong black mother and a coming-of-age path for Manny, while land ownership and past colonial harm shape the conflict.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for 40 Acres.
Woke representation / casting
The central cast is a blended black and Indigenous family, with a black woman leading the farm and an Indigenous man as her partner. The story gives clear backstory for this casting, so it fits the world rather than looking like a random group. The official story and interviews still present this family as a deliberate new form of representation. Hailey’s strength comes from military training and experience, not empty claims of female superiority.
34%
Woke political dialogue
A family book lesson names classism, genocide, and oppression. Hailey says the Union government harmed black people before society fell apart. Galen links modern food and land use to colonial harm and stresses Indigenous history. These ideas appear in several scenes, but most dialogue deals with farming, family, and defense.
43%
Identity-driven story themes
The family’s black and Indigenous history is built into the reason the farm matters. The title uses the broken 40 acres and a mule promise as a symbol of land, freedom, and heritage. The family keeps its history through books, Cree language, traditional knowledge, food, music, farming, and ceremony. Manny’s growth moves from hard survival rules toward empathy, connection, and a new idea of black masculinity.
68%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film presents the Union government as a force that harmed black people and treats outside institutions with deep suspicion. Characters link land, packaged food, and social collapse to colonial harm. Hailey’s fear of outsiders drives the family conflict, while Manny argues that survival needs community. The main villains are cannibal raiders, so the institutional critique is a strong side theme rather than the whole plot.
48%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. 40 Acres is an original story, not an adaptation of a known character or fictional universe. Its use of the real 40 acres and a mule history is background for the plot, not a changed historical character.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The film has identity-focused themes, but available public discussion did not show a clear anti-woke campaign or broad complaint that it pushes DEI or identity politics. The few online comments using “woke” were isolated and did not create a sustained backlash.
0%
Creator track record context
The creative group has a mixed but clearly identity-aware record. Lora Campbell and Jennifer Holness have strong histories centered on trans, disability, black history, and underrepresented voices. Taj Critchlow, Danielle Deadwyler, Sudz Sutherland, and Kim Taylor-Coleman add further representation-focused work. R.T. Thorne has a milder record tied to discrimination and cultural history, while several other listed creators have little such public record.
