Maria and Ingvar are a quiet, childless couple who run a sheep farm in a remote valley in Iceland. Their lives change when one ewe gives birth to Ada, a strange child with a lamb’s head and a human body. The couple hides Ada from the ewe and raises her as their own, hoping she will heal the grief left by their lost daughter. Ingvar’s troubled brother Petur arrives and makes the new family less peaceful.
The movie centers on grief, parenthood, and the cost of taking a child from its natural mother. Maria grows fiercely protective of Ada, while Ingvar enjoys the hope of having a family again. The story makes nature feel powerful and morally serious as the humans try to control a life they do not understand. The quiet farm setting gives way to dark humor, sudden violence, and a grim folk-horror ending.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Lamb.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main human cast fits the Icelandic setting. Maria does hard farm work, but Ingvar works beside her and the film does not frame her role as a representation or empowerment message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. Characters talk about farm work, grief, sex, family, and folklore. They do not use modern identity, DEI, or activist talking points.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film gives the ewe a clear claim to Ada and shows the human parents’ choice as a violation of nature. That creates a mild animal-rights or anti-human-control reading. The story focuses more on grief, parenthood, and folklore than on a modern cause.
12%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The conflict comes from grief, possessiveness, and human control of nature. The film does not present family life, Christianity, capitalism, or Western institutions as targets of a modern activist message.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Lamb is a new folktale-style story with original characters. It does not change a known character, franchise, or historical person.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X check found no anti-woke complaints. Web and audience reaction centered on the strange hybrid, the slow pace, and confusion about the marketing, not DEI or identity politics.
0%
Creator track record context
The director’s public work centers on folklore, nature, family, grief, and visual craft, with no clear activist record. Writer Sjón has supported multicultural literature and written other works about queer history and far-right violence. Noomi Rapace has a feminist public profile, while Béla Tarr and Hrönn Kristinsdóttir have stronger records tied to opposition to authoritarian politics and women’s representation. Lamb keeps those outside signals in the background.
