Manel is a Spanish lawyer who has shut himself away after his wife dies in a car crash. He lives in Galicia with his cat, Lúculo, while a rabies-like virus turns infected people into fast, violent attackers. When his sister calls from the Canary Islands, Manel leaves his home and crosses roads, boats, and a ruined hospital to reach her. The film mixes grief, fear, bloody action, and a few warm moments with the cat.
The film puts family loyalty, survival, and kindness at the center of the story. Manel begins as a weak and lonely man, but danger pushes him to help Gabriela, Viktor, a nurse, a nun, and children. Women appear as a nurse, a nun, and a family leader, but the film does not build a modern identity message around them. The story treats government failure, quarantine, and armed groups as parts of a disaster plot, not as a speech about present-day politics.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End.
Woke representation / casting
Pritchenko is written as a Ukrainian firefighting pilot but is played by Mexican actor José María Yazpik. The film also includes Russian sailors and other international survivors. The worldwide outbreak gives a story reason for people from different places to meet in Galicia. The film does not present this cast mix as a diversity goal, and the lead remains a Spanish man.
12%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. News scenes discuss Covid-19, the United Nations, and government measures, but those lines explain the outbreak rather than push modern identity or activist ideas.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The film centers on grief, survival, family, and mercy. It does not make race, sex, sexuality, gender roles, or social justice the main subject.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows failed prevention, quarantine, and government breakdown as parts of the outbreak. It does not turn those events into a modern attack on capitalism, patriarchy, Christianity, or Western culture.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie changes the novel by adding Manel’s dead-wife story and changing some character roles. Those changes affect plot and structure, but they do not swap a character’s race, gender, sexuality, or identity.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The available X pass, news coverage, Reddit threads, and audience reviews show no clear complaints that the film pushes woke, DEI, or identity politics. Most complaints concern the ending, dubbing, zombie ideas, and faithfulness to the book.

Creator track record context
The stored director scores are 0 and 1, and their records are mainly genre and production work. The stored writer scores are 0 and 10, with Loureiro focused on thrillers and Agudo having one LGBTQ-focused credit but no activist persona. The producers also have low scores, while casting director Alejandro Gil has a score of 21 because of #TransVisible and public representation work. No title-specific identity message connects that background to this film.
